| Posted: | | | | I am sorry... but I truly believe that when it comes to the main invelos database no user should have any more power then any other user.
I truly believe any locking of common names is a terrible idea
I truly believe any fake birth years should be local only. That we do not put anything like that into the shared online.
There is a HUGE difference between sharing stuff like head shots and gallery images compared to something in the main online database. | | | Pete |

There is a huge difference : what we share is generally correct data (though errors are always possible, (especially for headshots) and are discussed in the forum), and most of data in the main database is voluntarily incorrect, full of recopied mistakes and invented fake names. | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | And what I and others believe to be accurate to the release we are profiling. I can't understand that (while I personally think you do have some good points) not everyone agrees with you on all these subjects. And we are allowed to have our opinions just as much as you do. Even if we don't feel the need to bombard the forums with our opinion at any slight chance possible. | | | Pete |

Even if Ken decided on doing this (in my opinion terrible... database ruining) idea... you would definitely never get my vote. I don't think I have ever seen you make what looked like a serious post.... ever. On that note...I need to get to work... at least for me... to be continued tomorrow. | | | Pete | | | Last edited: by Addicted2DVD |

| Posted: | | | | Just to be clear, I do not use common names in my database, so honestly don't care what you guys do.
That being said, there is a fatal flaw in this suggestion. Without Ken adding something to the rules supporting this, you can't hold other users...especially those that don't visit the forums...to any ruling you decide to make. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Several times, as I have a large collection with over 7'000 films, I ended up having a certain person under it's common name 30 or more times. Some days later it did change the other way. There where contributions of about 5 films changed from others, the other 25 remained under the old name. So if I do not change them they will do this forever. Every time you make a flip flop the database get's bader, because some are changed, the rest not. It would be great to have a common name thread and then that common name would be locked. The other way it's just a working therapy, changing a lot of profiles forward and back again and that never ends. I am really not happy with the system today. Also we should have a database where you can put a name and get the common name back, searching everytime in the forum is a pain, works only over google, the local search is for nothing. It's really hard to work efficient and fast with the solution from today. Fritz | | | * 3D TV Panasonic TX-P65VT30J + Blu-ray Player Panasonic DMP-BDT500 My Filmcollection online: www.filmkino.ch * |

Do you audit each and every film on you own?? Quote: That being said, there is a fatal flaw in this suggestion. Yes, people not following the forum don't know about common names. Neither birth years. An no: Their lack of knowing decisions of such a board won't worsen that, since theese guys leave the name linking to others anyways. | | | Complete list of Common Names • A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1) |

There are many examples where names get changes over time: broader knowledge leads towards name changes, artistical names as well as marriage change names to new ones (which - a few years later - are the only ones remembered) or sometimes simply the fact that initials are used to differentiate from a better known colleague... The idea of locking was only intended to prevent flip flopping, not switching. Quote: Also we should have a database where you can put a name and get the common name back, ... | Posted: | | | | There has been quite a lot of work and effort by people on "Common Names" for many years now.
All that work and effort would be better spent on other things related to the online database, IMHO. Who really cares how actors are "most commonly credited?" It may be interesting to a degree but not enough to warrant the amount of time and effort being spent on it. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Grendell: Quote: Who really cares how actors are "most commonly credited?" I agree with that (and personally I do not enter the information "credited as" in my database). What is really important is the possibility to link, sort, search, and filter, all functions that need a true database. And to work properly, a true database must be builded on the concept "one object"="one identifier". Building a database on a concept "as credited" means each "object" can be "known" under several identifiers, or two different "objects" be known under the same identifier, and we have no more a database, but a huge mess. I appreciate efforts from AiAustria to try to make the online database work better, and specially on BY. About common names, if we stick on rules as they are now, I think the battle is lost, though very litlle changes would solve thousands of problems. | | | Images from movies |
