Will the size of the case determine it's case type or the material used?

Until Invelos (Ken) tells us by a rule-update, this question has to be left unanswered.

To avoid ambiguities I'd wish for option b though.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Maybe it is me, because I am already confused about all these case types, but it seems that a lot of people here are talking about "metalpak" and not "metal case". I thought that "metal case" was meant to be anything metal and not another name for a specific type of case ? Or is the poll options meant to read "metalpak" instead of "metal case"? Still confused ? Huh

The top one is a SteelBook, the bottom on a MetalPak:

MetalPaks are inferior, flimsy, cheaper construction, and not to mention the horrible spine.  As far as the poll, the generic term Metal Case is just that a generic term to lump them all together.

As far as people chooing that over having both because of being less complicated, I just don't get....  Use Metal Case if you aren't sure....

It's simple. Steelbook if it's a Steelbook. Metal Case if it's anything else made of metal.

For that matter, why don't we have an option for cheapo, eco-friendly keep cases?  Or for the accursed multi-disc keep cases with stacked discs?  I hate those too, but we don't seem to care to differentiate those.

Apples and oranges perhaps?  SteelBooks are the most common (and to most the most preferred Metal Case).  I don't think there are websites for people that collect standard cases, but there are quite a few devoted to SteelBooks.

I actually wouldn't mind those options you selected, although I'm sure they vary on releases.  I'd love to have the ability to add the brand (Vortex, Viva Elite) as well as the size (2-Disc, 3Disc, Double hub, etc) as well, although that makes more sense to keep it local.  I do track them in my collection with tags, but if the option to have custom entries in your local ever became available I'd probably do so.

Why are you against?  I don't get it, if you don't care, mark all of yours Metal Case and leave it at that.  Is it really that complicated that it will confuse people when contributing?  If you are unsure and submitting a brand new profile mark it as Metal Case.  If it is an actually SteelBook someone who can tell the difference can update it.

I can live with both, but please, let's not make it any more difficult for inexperienced users to contribute than it already is.

This would be an opportune time for inexperienced users to learn the difference and if they don't know they can always ask.  Worst case, if they don't care they don't have to contribute that field.

That picture of the spines should be all anyone needs to tell the difference. Steelbooks have nice looking spines with logos that fit, look straight and centered. Metalpaks have hinges, the ugly line and logos fit in around the design flaws. I can tell the difference in half a second, and so can any trained or even informed eye.

But there is no gray area here ... it's either a specific type of case (i.e. SteelBook) or it isn't.

Not to mention that the inside of a SteelBook case has the SteelBook logo molded into the plastic.

This thread also shows the differences between an IronPack, Metal Box, and a SteelBook.

Well, they are all metal boxes. If we want to differentiate each type of box, why not differentiate for blu-ray : blue HD case (most frequent), white HD case, black HD case, red HD case, transparent HD case... I can provide images for those who have difficulties to see the differences...

This sort of reply is the perfect illustration of the lack of empathy experts often display towards novices. This is why often IT helpdesks are ineffective, user manuals are so poor etc.

Thanks dee1959jay.

Possibly too late now to remind of one of the basic rules for databases:
Keep it simple!

IMO, those that by all means want to differentiate between the different types of "Cases made of metal" should do so local (Magic Word: Tags).
After all even the now existing compromise is nowhere near covering all the different types of metal packages (as pointed out by rdodolak).
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

But the Steelbook collectors will be satisfied, and that's all that really matters.
