In fact I get a discount through my work if I buy one.
But I hate to deal with things that have to be sent to me. The wait is one thing, plus what if something is wrong with it. I just can't return it to the store, I would have to send it back and wait again.
Something as major as a computer purchase I like to be able to do a store return.
Since all I really need is a new computer, perhaps I'll just buy the computer itself and update the monitor later.
Question.
Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but will my old CRT monitor work with current computers? |

| | Posted: | | | | Darn, just lost a monster post. Net, get the Dell on your Corporate plan. They won't let you down, and shipping will be fast. You might even get onsite warranty.
Make sure to get at least 2gb ram, and Gigabit LAN or wireless N. Make sure you get Windows Home Premium or above, and the processor will be the right size and you will have the right tools to do what you want.
I agree with post that said if you have to compromise on the hard drive in the beginning, that is a very easy thing to upgrade later. Do not try to use the old CRT. You could perhaps use your HDTV if you hve one, temporarily as a screen to save money.
Or look for the best laptop deal. I still have a Dell 600 - works fine as spare guest email machine. | | | Thanks for your support.

I've had nothing but bad, and I mean bad, experiences with HP, both in terms of product quality and customer service.
I've never owned an eMachine so I can't comment on their quality, performance or customer service, other than what I've read, which has been a mixed bag.
I've owned a few Dells and can attest to the quality and performance which has been from good to excellent. If you can live with the outsourced customer service in India then you'd be better off getting the Dell on your corporate plan.
Personally, I've given up the Desk Top PC in favor of a powerful full-sized laptop. It saves space and is somewhat portable. I have an Acer Aspire 8730 with an 18.5" full HD widescreen and full keyboard. I love it and have never had a single problem with it.

I understand it may be easier to return to the store should something go wrong, but Dell has various warranty tiers, one of which is they come to you should their be a problem. But even the lowest tier is they will send a box to you to mail out your desktop and it's generally prepaid. So it's even easier than taking it to the store. | | | Reviewer, HorrorTalk.com

I have never had to return a dell for service but then ii pay for the 24/7 on site service, they come to me. That also includes phone tech support. I usually buy the 4 year plan. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!

500GB and for something like $360 including a two year extended plan.
I would have got a monitor from them for $80 but they were sold out. So I'll get that asap.
Right now I'm uploading browser settings (bookmarks, passwords etc) and DVD Profiler backups to Medicafire.
Then I'll hook up the new computer and download all that stuff to the new computer tomorrow morning.
Right now I'm too tired. |

Emachines have an unerring capacity for failure and HPs are SO proprietary it isn't funny, as well as loading the computer down with so much CRAP. Their CS is horrible too. For a store-bought desktop computer I usually recommend Dell. Ultimately I'd like to build one for my customers but unfortunately I can't compete with store-bought prices, not when a reputable motherboard/CPU combo alone can cost $300+  -kd5- | | | | Time is the fire in which we burn. | | Posted: | | | | For what its worth, my first work computer was an HP (2005 ->), used it at work for about 3-4 years, never had a single problem. It served as my HTPC for a year. Its stored in my cellar, still working as new, just don't need it. At that time all the other computers at work were also HP's and had no problems. |

Already did a backup disc.
The speed compared to my old computer is outstanding. Internet pages loads up almost instantly. Downloads are quick. I can even watch youtube videos again.
Now I have to play around with how to do videos on here.
One thing I learned is that I have to buy a new printer, no parallel ports anymore.
I'm going to burn important files onto DVD+R discs.
Right now I'm very happy. And in case anything happens I have a two year warranty/protection plan in place. |
