After the "big one" there won't be any wood left to fuel your wood fueled 'electric turbine' .

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides first streaming title with 7.1 audio.

4 Cons right off the top of my head:

1) Not HD quality
2) Probably compressed so much as to make it pointless
3) Only available from one source...VUDU
4) Only in English

I agree. There's a lot of streaming going on that is said to be HD (720p and even 1080p) and 5.1 or now even 7.1 audio, but there's no way they are streaming the same amount of data as a Blu-ray (let's say 30 GB). You lose a lot of quality in the compression.

I think the point that most people on boards like this miss is, while you and I might be concerned about quality loss, the target audience, i.e. the rest of the world, doesn't even notice.  They watch their movies on their phones, for god's sake.

Yeah, right. The rest of the world is sitting at home on their sofas streaming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on their Nokias .

I don't know how anyone can get entertainment out of the POC films. There just total junk of the worst kind. The only saving grace of the 4th one, is that it did not have Orlando Bloom in it.

I actually enjoyed the first one. The second 2 you can sink along with Davy Jones's locker. I have yet to see "On Stranger Tides" so I can't comment.

I was dragged to see it with a couple of mates. One of those mates being his gf and you know women Johnny Depp blah blah.

If you want to study a film which does not try to hide the fact it's existence is pointless. Then your going to love it.

Or if your looking for the cure for insomnia then you found it.

And yet you watched all four? Surely stopping after the first if you have such a low opinion would have been a good idea? If only to keep your sanity.

Personally I love them. Obviously I like total junk.

On topic...I don't know about you lot in the US, but the value of DVD's has dropped significantly in the UK since Blu-ray appeared.

I used to be able to sell my DVDs to Blockbuster/Cast Convertors for anything from £1-£5 depending on the age of the film.
Over time that price has dropped.

Now, Blockbuster offer between 10p upwards and most stuff (unless it's a new release) you only get between 20p-40p.
Cash Convertors were offering 60p per DVD, but that recently dropped to 40p.

I have found the only way to make any money on DVDs is eBay, and ONLY if the film is rare or very popular.

This happened with VHS when DVD appeared and now you can't even give VHS to some charity shops because they can't get rid of them.
Now the same things seems to be starting with DVD.

I've finally got to the point now that I won't buy anything on DVD unless it's very cheap or ONLY on DVD because I know in the long term I will replace on Blu-ray and the DVD will be worthless.

You don't understand what makes a bad film unless you make the effort to watch a bad film. But i agree film is mostly subjective. Which is one mans trash is another mans trash.

I was just spending time with my mates. And i hardly can see any of my mates (well a couple maybe), jumping with joy at the prospect of  say watching Robert Altmans masterpiece 3 Women. One of the best character studies of all time, about finding stability in identifying with other people.

Also if you ever thought Shelley Duvall could not act, then this film will massively change your opinion. Don't want to go on rant so i will end it there

Well considering how many people are watching their content on their televisions with the original factory settings, stretched out and over-processed like a bad video game, how many of them do you think really notice quality?  It's not my fault the general population doesn't have your discerning eye.

You got a point there. The masses did embrace 3D

Spot on. That's why streaming is steamrolling and is the way of the future, like it or not.
