I know Criterion and others have released several window-boxed titles, to much dismay. Their claim was that this area would be lost in overscan anyway. Of course many modern displays don't have any overscan, or at least allow it to be turned off. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | The 4X3 version of Evil Dead on BD has the bars on the sides, as do many special features on both dvd and bd.
Pop that in your bd player hooked up to a 16X9 tv and you'll see it in 1.33, with bars burned into the sides and no physical distortion. Pop in the old non-anamorphic Elite dvd to the same set up and you'll see a 1.78 image, but squished and distorted.
I have no issue with this as I want to see stuff in the proper ratio. My problem will come if they start cropping 2.35 to 1.78 like cable and Alliance already does. It's the same ammount of picture loss as cropping a hard matted 1.85 film to 1.33 (most 1.85 just opens up the soft matte to make 1.33, check King of New York, Hard Boiled or The Killer for hard mattes).
Or if cheap companies start releasing BD's that have false 1.33 ratios, like they used the wrong side of the old dvd to master. So far it looks like cheapies are all 1.78. |

| Posted: | | | | non ananmorphic movies that are letterbox are 4:3 with bars on top and bottom..
anamorphic movies (letterboxed) are automatically 16x9 .. and as reported above most if not all dvd reading software can detect if the said material is 4x3 or 16 x 9 ..
plus the naked eye way ( for detecting anamorphic) is - if the "view" on your TV monitor has: Normal - Image looks squeezed to the center ( left and right sides) Wide - Looks looks fantastic and fills the 16 x 9 screen perfectly and flawlessly Zoom - Image looks Buffed and missing sides when comparing it back to wide or normal, top and bottom are squeezed downwards Widezoom - Image is extreamly blurred and missing a lot of information
and a final way is if the image/movie (dvd) contains subtitles look to see where the subtitles sit..
Are they missing or barley visable?? you are then on the wrong viewing mode .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Pop in the old non-anamorphic Elite dvd to the same set up and you'll see a 1.78 image, but squished and distorted. If the player is correctly configured, a non-anamorphic DVD will be displayed on the 16:9 monitor as 4:3, with pillar bars. If the non-anamorphic DVD image is stretched to fill the screen, the player has been told that the display device is 4:3, which results in the player doing nothing to the video with the monitor stretching it to fill the screen. Correct configurations of the player and display will result in correct display of the video being played, no matter if it is Blu-ray, or DVD (anamorphic or not). | | | Mr Video Productions If it isn't Unix, it isn't an OS :-) |

| Posted: | | | | I have a pdf that came from thedigitalbits.com back in 2000 and is still the source I refer to when people ask about anamorphic. I don't have a way to post it, but if anyone would like, it's only 524kb and I could email it to them. Maybe one of you with a website could post it.
Edit: It has illustrations that depict every aspect of 4:3 vs widescreen. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. | | | Last edited: by mreeder50 |
