| Posted: | | | | When it comes to genres... I think we have the best rule that we possibly could. Basically only changing them if they are blatantly incorrect... everything else keep local. | | | Pete |

Basically only changing them if they are blatantly incorrect... everything else keep local. Minor detail: the rules don't actually say that. They say not to make contributions that only change or re-order the genres. But it is allowed to include such a change as part of a wider update. |

| Posted: | | | | I agree about docuentary and special interest. There's no point having a genre that just duplicated another. i think it should only be used for non-fiction that doesn't fall into the accessories, sports, documentary, music or comedy. |

| Posted: | | | | Having not read anything but the first post in this thread, I had a thought about a dvd I have. John Carpenter's Halloween: Extended Cut. Now the film on the dvd is widescreen, and it obviously wasn't shown that way on TV. It also has the nudity and blood that was cut from the original TV version, but includes the newer scenes that were exclusive to the TV cut. So it's a hybrid including stuff made for TV (well documented they filmed the additional scenes while filming Halloween 2, to pad the runtime for ABC). So the question is, should this disc have TV in the genres? |

| Posted: | | | | I like the television genre. I set all television shows to have that as the main genre (and lock the field) so it's quick and easy for me to filter on 'em and see which ones I haven't had a chance to sit down and slug it out through just yet. I would like it to stay, but if it gets eliminated one day, no sweat. The custom genres is awesome. I also actually like the classic genre. I rarely if ever enter it when submitting a profile (unless it's something that's generally considered a universal classic), but I do set quite a few of my own profiles locally with the classic genre... as to what I consider classics, which probably doesn't line up well with what others would consider classics. | | | The night is calling. | Posted: | | | | I really like the idea of a new field in the database that enables a selection between Movie/TV-Movie/TV-Show/DtD to be made in some way. (It would also give everyone an opportunity to debate whether the options should use the word Movie or Film.)
I have to say I’m very disappointed at the number of people here who have expressed not just a liking, but a more profound emotional connection to cheese. (I imagine there are ‘specialised’ web sites cater for this sort of preference hidden away in the depths of the Internet somewhere and feel this sort of adult topic is wholly inappropriate for this forum). I’d hazard a guess that these people are all haters of the Television Genre too, which I love!
I’d actually like to see an option added to the database to use to indicate whether a film has a cat in it or not (domestic cats, not wild or big cats; animated cats would be fine though). My cat (Penny) generally likes to come and sit on my lap when I watch a film; she’s a great lover of films*, if a somewhat more discerning viewer than I am. It would be really great to be able to let her know if a particular film is going to be of special interest to her or not, so she doesn’t fall asleep during the ‘human bits’ and miss out. Last night was a classic example of this, where in the film I was watching a lovely black cat had nearly a minute of screen time and a section of one-way dialogue devoted to him/her; unfortunately no speaking part though). I was left wondering if I should wake Penny up to see the cat in the film I was watching, or let her sleep on. It actually spoilt my enjoyment of the film a bit if I'm honest. This is the sort of thing that’s really hard to find out in other ways, even IMDB doesn’t seem to cover this, so to have it included here would be really helpful. (I guess we could usefully extend this idea to other things too, such as dogs, mice, rabbits, elephants; and okay cheese too.)
As an aside, Penny is not a huge fan of films with aggressive 5.1 sound mixes; poor thing stares at the ceiling a lot.
*Either this or she knows she’s probably not going to be disturbed from her preferred sleeping place for 90 minutes or so. She certainly knows the sound the DVD player's draw makes means this option is about to become available, although not the blu-ray player's yet. | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |

| Posted: | | | | As many others have said, I use the television genre myself however I have been working on killing the classic genre locally as it's just about useless for my purposes. |
