Quote: That helps a lot. I think I will make an adjustment to the way I submit Special Effects crew in the future. The only problem with leaving out "Special Effects" (if that's what you intend to do) is that someone will come along after you and contribute them. Everyone has to vote again. Screeners have to evaluate again. Everyone gets notified of a new update. Double the work. As much as it seems helpful to discriminate and only input the ones "we're after", it really just causes extra work in my opinion. OK, now my head hurts. I guess, since my contributions have been being accepted, I'll keep doing what I'm doing until we have definitive guidelines to the contrary. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |

Sounds lovely, but keep in mind that the exact same scenario applies if, at some point, the rules get clarified - like we've seen for the "Sound" credit. Then we might have to remove these lower-level credits again: "Everyone has to vote again. Screeners have to evaluate again. Everyone gets notified of a new update. Double the work." That's just how it works... If we agree that it's strange that we leave out the mid-level credit while allowing the lower-level people, and if we agree that it's strange that we don't consistently enter the same people doing the same job just based on the all-too-subtle distinction of being credited either as "Special Effects Crew", "Special Effects Technicians" or just "Special Effects" - if we agree on that, then wouldn't it be better to campaign for a rule change, rather than blindly trying to lump in everyone and their mothers into this credit? |

It would indeed be better to get the rule changed. I think that would be a great idea. In the meantime, any effort to not lump in everyone and their mother is ultimately futile because someone will do it regardless. That's my point, and I think we're in basic agreement. It's the same situation with Costume Designer. Who cares who the Costumes [by], Costume Supervisor, Gowns [by], Wardrobe [by], Wardrobe Designer or Wardrobe Supervisor is when there is a credited Costume Designer? Yet if you add the Costume Designer and leave the others out, someone will come along and helpfully add them for you. As you point out, the trick is to get the rule changed. I've advocated changing that Costume Designer rule to no avail. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | Lumping everyone and their mothers into this credit is, unfortunately, the nature of this credit. Any Visual/Digital/Special/Special Visual Effects, including Designer, Supervisor, and Director and, most recently, Special Photographic Effects credit has been lumped into this single credit. As there is no longer a distinction between those jobs, I don't see the point in worrying about 'mid-level' vs 'low-level'...though the use of those two terms did make me laugh. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once.
