edit: I'm absolutely convinced that these records (played games, game duration, number of aces...) will remain forever. Simply because there is bound to be a rule change based on this match. I would be very surprised if they didn't introduce fifth set tie-break to Wimbledon next year (and third set tie-break to ladies matches).

But then it would be just like any other tournament, nothing special anymore.

But Wimbledon is not the only one without 5th set tie-breaks. At least French Open has also non-tiebreak 5th set and certainly many others. I mean, the "speciality" of Wimbledon doesn't lie in the rules (which are not that special) but in the heritage.

edit: I think the main thing is to prevent these kinds of marathon battles, because it puts players who had to go through one, in "handicap" position in the next round. Maybe some kind of compromise could be introduced: if the fifth set (or 3rd in women's matches) is not decided within 25 games, tie-break will be used (i.e. when the fifth set is 12-12) or something along those lines...

It just shows how stupid the rules regarding the final set really are. It had to happen one day. Statistically speaking we might just as well see a 120:118 final set result one day. This ridiculous system has to be changed to a tie-break. Maybe make it that the tiebreak doesn't come into play at 6-6 but rather at 8-8 or 9-9 to please the tiebreak haters.

To each his own, but because of the long fifth set, I consider this to be one of the greatest matches in all of tennis history. If there had been a fifth set tiebreak, after it was over everyone would have been... "eh"... and moved on instead of being able to see two players of equal caliber and endurance push themselves to their ultimate limits having done something that has never come close before (longest match ever prior to this one was 6 hours, 33 minutes). The chanting if the crowd prior to the day's suspension is proof that they loved it and were happy to see it continue.

I'm not entirely against fifth set tiebreaks, but they are anti-climactic for some people (my family being one of them) similar to an OT first-possession field goal in football.

I was happy to see it go that many extra games on this third day. It would have sucked horribly if one guy won via the first eight straight points. Match over in 2 minutes.

I also just realized that if you tell anyone about the final set only, they may think you are talking about a basketball game instead of tennis
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

They are a specialty of the grand slam tournaments, except the US Open which abandoned them sometime ago. That's just one of the things that make them "grander" than the rest of the tournaments but if you take away their traditions one by one, some day there won't be much of that heritage left. Besides, I'm sure Wimbledon and its sponsors got a lot of extra coverage because of this game which would otherwise already be forgotten. Why would anyone want to lose that? The only pity is that it didn't happen in the final, that would have been something even more extraordinary to watch!

Yes, in final it would have been ok, but it really drains the competitors in earlier phases of tournament. It would be more fair to have the 5th set tie-break or some kind of compromise akin to one I described. The heritage or media sexyness won't hurt at all if this kind of farce is avoided next year - the opposite, infact, IMHO
