In my opinion focusing on one or two platforms is the wrong decision considering that each platform has only a limited market share and not the same status as Windows on the desktop. If you are serious in targeting the mobile market, you have to consider the following platforms at the moment: - iPhone - Android - Blackberry - Windows Phone 7 (don't underestimate the platform; Microsoft will definitely be in it for the long run) - WebOS (depending on the future HP strategy) - Bada (depending on the future Samsung strategy) - Symbian (just to put everything in perspective: current market share near 50%; it's loosing but still the #1 mobile operating system)
Each of these platforms has its own SDK and you have to rewrite some/many portions of the application for each platform. The easiest solution would be a platform independent web solution, since this limits the development efforts. Not everybody has unlimited data plan or data plan worldwide, and one of DVD Profiler biggest qualities is being able to be on a store anywhere in the world and consult your collection on your cell phone so you don't buy duplicates or lesser Editions. That's was one of the reasons I bought DVD Profiler over other options. Is there a way to do that with an only online solution - perhaps cache your collection? | | | Last edited: by MB17 |

Okay, my personal reasons are: - too much money to spend just for the brand "Apple": PCs or notebooks with the same technical specs are much cheaper from other companies, same goes for iPods etc. - glossy displays (yuk, I don't want to see my face when I look at a display) - too much control/restrictions over content from other programmers (even worse than Microsoft) - I don't like white hardware - the "Apple" fanboys are by far the worst group of fanboys ever! (From my experience in different forums, it's almost some kind of religion. Everytime Apple releases something new these "disciples" hype it ecstatically, no matter what. Even iPoo would sell well...) Evertime I want to buy some new hardware (display, PC, mp3-Player) I check what's on the market, compare the specs and select what suites my needs. Apple hardware never had a chance... An example: When I looked for a new PC display I wanted a non-glare 24'' display, 16:10 ratio (1920x1200), with an non-TN panel (S-PVA or IPS), price limit 650€. In this special case Apple had nothing to offer: Most displays had a 16:9 ratio (1920x1080), all glossy and a price way beyond my limit. (~1000€ when I remember correctly. For this money I could have bought an "Eizo" which would have suited ALL my needs, with a five year "Pick-Up and Return" warranty including replacement for the display until it is fixed!) I ended up with a Hyundai W241D that is perfect! One of the rare 24'' non-glare 16:10 S-PVA displays for 450€. And I love it! I hope no one feels attacked by my statement, it's all IMHO and in the end everyone is free to buy whatever he wants. But I know that I want the most bang for my buck. | | | Last edited: by SpaceFreakMicha |

| Posted: | | | | @ SpaceFreakMicha I don't take that as an attack and neither should anyone else. Those were just concise facts based on what was obviously a lot of research. I asked because I use a Mac at work and have for almost 20 years. In the DTP (Desktop Publishing) arena, the Mac has a slight edge, unless you are technically inclined or have access to someone who can help you make your PC files compatible with a Mac. I use a PC at home and always have. My PC has QuarkXPress, Adobe CS5 and all the major programs needed to do serious DTP or any type Agency work. I can take files from the office and home back and forth without issue. The only way I would have a Mac at home is if I was given one...not because I don't like them, but as an IT guy, I like to build my own and am continually tweaking them. Plus, there is a lot more software available for the PC. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. | | | Last edited: by mreeder50 |
