I've modified the first post to hopefully help those who were confused.  Instead of "Unrated", the proposal is to name it "NR (Modified)"

You lost me on that Ken... the whole purpose of this for me at least is to be able to have the rating in the program to match what I actually see on the cover.

Now I do not understand it at all anymore, the whole first post makes no sense to me now

What I really do not get is that some do not understand that NR is EXACTLY the same as Unrated.
Itm is just a different wording.

Like you can say, that girl looks beautiful or that girl looks really nice.

Different wording with the same meaning

Ring around the Rosie. I will not comment on that any more other then to say not everyone sees it that one.

The original wording did not go with what's on the cover.  Some of the titles covered by that wording would have been "NR" on the cover and others "Unrated" on the cover.

There are several ways to do this:
- Strictly by the cover
- A modified version of the theatrical release (could be NR, could be Unrated on the cover)
- By the cover or a modified version of a theatrical release

I put it to you Pete, which would you choose?

I think what would cover at least the most of what the majority wants (no such thing as a perfect rule) would be to have the listing as Unrated and then out of your choices...

"- By the cover or a modified version of a theatrical release"

I think from there for the ones that don't seem to fit right it would be easy to change locally.

That is going by what it seemed like to me the majority of the other thread was wanting if I understood it correctly.

But it clearly doesn't make the rating match the cover for many titles.

That is more of a thing I personally want. I was going by what it seemed like would give us the outcome of what the majority wants. In other words going by the past polls and such it seemed like that is what would make the most people happy. I may have to change a good handful locally to get what I want... but it is better then having to do it all myself or not having the option to do it at all.

I'm still concerned about the word "previously" and how we would determine this and whether it make sense to enter unrated versions different depending whether they were put together before or after that rated version.

if the word previously bothers you... how about something like...

Changing...

- Unrated is an alternate version of a film which previously received a theatrical rating

to...

- Unrated is an alternate version of a rated film

if that is the way he chooses to go?

This is the way I'd deal with this mess.

ALWAYS enter what you see on the cover for contribution purposes.

For the purposes of ranking:

Not Rated (NR) < G
Unrated > R

For multiple releases/ratings, enter the highest rating for contributions.

Those who have a problem with the ranking above can make whatever adjustments they need to locally.

It's previously rated- as in before the DVD release, not "before this version was originally edited"

That is the perfect solution for me!    I was just trying my best to make the majority of people happy.

That is how I understood it... but apparently it was confusing to some? That is why I offered the rewording.

That's the least ideal scenario in my opinion.  I have a big pile of movies today that are NR.  I'd like to sort those into two piles.  One containing harmless material and one that is more mature or grown up in nature.  One pile I'd let a 5 year old pick from, the other I wouldn't.  Or one pile I'd be interested in on a Friday night and the other would be boring.  However you choose to look at it.

Going strictly by the cover, some of the things from the second pile will end up in the first.  Because some movies plaster Unrated all over the cover and some don't.

I realize your method is easier.  It will lead to less arguments.  I accept this.  But like I said before, these ease of arriving at a rating doesn't make the incorrect data any more useful.  And one of the points people have brought up is sorting the existing pile of NR discs into two different piles.  So I'd rather not come up with a rule that deliberately sorts things into the wrong pile.
