I just finishing watching the latest incarnation of Dr. Who. I am not sure how much I like Smith in the role of 'John Smith' yet, but he is much better than I was afraid he might me. Time will tell if he can match Tennant, or heaven forfend, Tom Baker. I like the new Tardis and the Spoiler:  (Select to view)
new, green sonic screwdriver
and I am completely smitten with Karen Gillan as the latest companion, Amy Pond. Red hair and freckles with a cute accent does it everytime.    And the series trailer at the end of the episode left me hopeful with anticipation.

I absolutely loathe the new opening titles however. The look like something made for an late 80s American action program with tacky music to match.

Bob:

I have never been a Who follower. I have started watching this new incarnation and find it...interesting. The opening titles I can't judge, I have no background to base it on. But  the music...isn't that part of the Who signature, it's hard to have Star Trek without Alexander Courage. Most TV music tends to be a little on the tacky side, the networks don't want to spend a lot of money on a full orchestra.

The only thing I wish they would stop, is having him say "Geronimo" every episode  .

When I heard that in the trailer, I thought "oh god no, they've given him a catchphrase!"
But I'm glad to say I haven't actually really noticed him saying it in many of the episodes so far.
I'm also keen on seeing where Smith goes with his performance - he seems to be playing him much more "alien" than the previous (modern) doctors.
So far I've only been really disappointed with the Dalek episode, especially considering who wrote it. The Angels story started strongly but came to a weak resolution, although I am enjoying the return of multi-part stories - gives the characters and the story room to breathe.

I was pleased to see the return of the Silurians this week, though a bit disappointed by their look - I preferred the mask she wore! And where's the third eye gone?

And finally - bring back the Zygons!

It's Series 5 of the New Doctor Who (since the 2005 "reboot" of the franchise), not since the beginning of the series.

As Kinoniki stated, it is the 5th season of the rebooted Doctor Who (they are not counting the 5 specials last year as a season).  Technically, it is the 31st season of the show if you count the original series (there was a gap of sixteen years between shows, not counting the Fox movie in the mid-90s, so they just started numbering the seasons again from the beginning).

Color me a bit puzzled by the BBC's logic...but OK.

I can understand it kind of I think. When I first heard about the plot for upcoming reboot of Hawaii Five-O I thought, we were going to see Steve McGarrett Jr, investigating the murder of his father  and then moving on from that, but instead they have simply recast the original series, complete with Danno, Chin Ho, Kono and a Hawaiian Governor. It's not like Dr. Who , who has already been established to be recastable...but a 16 year gap...all righty then.

Just got the first volume of Series 5 in the mail. Not sure if this will be worth getting on Blu-ray. It's in 1080i/50 and the sound is Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. I suspect it will still look better than DVD but the lack of high definition sound is disappointing. If nothing else, a PCM 2.0 track would have been welcome.

The disc is region free, but I suspect the 50 Hz frame rate will make it unplayable on some systems.
