Converting 'C' into 'ç' is inventing data...

I disagree with that. As FRANCOIS TRUFFAUD is a french person, you have to read his given name "franssois", not "frankois", so C is converted into ç. It is when you convert it to c that you invent data.

I would not say that people let their own interpretation run wild. Most of people just do in dvdprofiler exactly what they do in normal life... So, except for people who invested much time to understand the rules and their oddnesses, normal contributors just do what seems normal for them. The problem is that rules always chose the less intuitive solution.

Good evening, Sirs,

tonight I'm interested in the capitalization of the last name DILASCIO (ac, entirely capitalized).

What's the standard?

Love, bbBbb

The standard by the book would be Dilascio without further information. DiLascio would be an ssumption per the Rules, a reasonable assumption but an assumption nonetheless and not per the Rules.

Based upon the credit we cannot assume that Di is the article Di as there is no spacing to CLEARLY define it as such, Di Lascio for example. More information and documentation would be required to support the article premise.

That doesn't change the fact that the database does distinguish cases.

Though CLT does not.

I would have to agree with T!M though, not knowing the actor I would assume nothing and enter it as Dilascio.

It is a tough one

But if you go strictly by the rules I agree with T!M, Skip and Kinoniki, and would enter it simple as Dilascio.
Tho a really reasonable attempt is DiLascio, but would need some documentation

cheers

Well, possibly bbbbb knew what he meant when he started this thread. There are DiLascios, DiMaggios,
DiPalmas, DeVitos so it can't be that difficult. So what's the problem?

I agree with Railroaded and I dasagree that the rules require you to only capitalize the first letter.

Actually, it CAN be that difficult...

My true last name is diFalco, but in cases where I've been forced to enter my last name in caps only, you cannot tell how my name really should be displayed in mixed case.  And to complicate matters further, in my early childhood, we used DiFalco as the norm, until a relative had some family history tracing done.

Without insider knowledge, you would not know how to correctly convert my last name from all caps to mixed case, so the only enterpretation that could be made for DVDP purposes is simply with a capital D and the remainder in lower case

Except, for some people, you can find that information.  Granted, you can't find it for everyone but, for those you can, they should be entered correctly.  Just my humble opinion.  But, as James pointed out, my local will ignore this stuff...as will the CLT...so I will always have LeVar, DeVito, etc.

Agreed...if you can find out that information, it should be entered with the correct case mix.  Then just citing the source of that info is good enough for me.

Funny. For Jean-Claude Forest, you had exactly the opposite position. Though it was easy to document the correct information, you considered it should not be entered correctly.

Can we please not turn every single thread into a discussion about JCF. The reasons for why that's different have been given already.

I just want to show inconsistencies.
Are we allowed, or not, to interpret data when we have proper documentation???
We cannot answer yes or no just as we want.

Funny. For Jean-Claude Forest, you had exactly the opposite position. Though it was easy to document the correct information, you considered it should not be entered correctly.

The difference, that you are conveniently ignoring, is that there was no '-' in the profiler allowed credit for Jean-Claude Forest.  I can't add a '-' when one doesn't exist in the credit.  The 'I' and 'L' in DILASCIO, are there and I have to convert them to proper case.

We all know what you want but, in this case, there are no inconsistencies.  You are trying to create one, but it isn't happening.

It exists in end credits. And more, in this case, CLT results is for J-C, since most contributors choose to correct the typo in front credits.

About consistency : you cannot add a "-", but you can decide to convert l to L . Where is the difference ?? : in both cases you interpret data on screen using external documentation.

Aren't whining about others doing exactly what you promote for Dilascio ?
