There's classic and then there's classics. Classic being films from the late 30's to the 50's.

Characterized as film noir referred to as classical to define the period of film making. Kind of like how all films that are silent fall under being silent movies  to define that period in cinematic history.

Then there's classics which are films from all of cinematic history which are considered by a large number of film fans to be the best films.
