Trust me, I am against Open Creds enough, that IF I could figure out an alternative, which was both workable and would eliminate the problems in the forums I would do so, if someone can give me a detailed response that meets the criteria of being workable AND eliminate the scrapping in the forums...I am all ears. But i don't think there is one, in almost Five years i haven't figured oneout and certainly not for lack of trying. I am listening and hoping someone can come up with something...but after working at it as long as I have...I am hopeful but doubtful.

But what I would really want is to have the sections like we have now... but change the roles to strictly text format and type what you see only for that section

This I would vote for. Sort of a "credited as" for crew roles but still within a well defined category. I'm not interested in completely open credits though. I would neither contribute nor vote for full open credits.

My solution, as I stated in another thread, would be something similar...

Keep the current general categories with a contributable 'custom role' field.  It would work the same way the 'credited as' system works for cast...

How far down do you want to be able to drill, Unicus. What is Art and so forth. What about Set Deco0, or any of the gazillion other Awards categories.

If I may be so bold as to ask that another thread be started to discuss a SOLUTION to the current problems with crew credits.

This poll was started to get people to vote either yeah or nay on the concept of fully open credits.  That's all.

Thanks.

Maybe I am missing something, but how does a discussion of solutions change the ability to vote in the poll?

I don't believe that I said that it changed the ability to vote in the poll, did I?

I simply asked that solutions be discussed elsewhere as this was not the original intent of this poll, and I think I might have an inkling about what the original intent was.

You guys are unbelievable.  I nicely ask that the thread be kept on topic, and I get a bunch of crap in return.

Let's imagine a hypothetical.

Suppose someone discovered that 35 years ago, long before he was somebody, that Tom Cruise worked as a Key Grip on X film, does that make that Credit valuable. I have no idea, nor do I know how I would feel about it personally, but I can certainly understand the argument that might be presented for it having value, I remember ken's similar argument relative to (uncredited).

No, hal, I don't think what you are asking is rational. As I said you don't want it cluttered with logic, which you apparently can't address. I do sympathize with you on that, i have had these same arguments with myself on this matter for near five years now, and I can't find a more viable answer.

I am all ears for any answer here or somewhere else and I really do hope that someone will posit something, that I can say WOW! great idea. (though that could be bad, i remember the BY idea which I still think was inspiration on your part but unfortunately in real life, it needs some fine tuning).

You see, hal, my argument on this is always going to be at odds with many of yoy here. Most of you are looking at this only through the lens of how it impacts YOU and what YOU want. I am looking at a much bigger picture than my own self-interests as is usually the case. Sorry. If you don't believe me look at your own comments, they all say basically the same thing Idon't want it, and what maybe best for the larger Community in all respects INCLUDING but not limited to better harmony in the Forums is not considered by anyone....but ME and a handful of others.

Holy overreaction Batman!

I am not sure why you overreacted the way you did, but you are acting like threads going off topic is a new thing.  Yes, you asked a simple yes or no question...but that question dealt with one solution to the current crew problem.  Did you honestly think people would just answer, one way or the other, and be done with it?  I'm sorry, but asking people to take the discussion, sparked by your poll question, to a new thread is just unrealistic.  In fact, when viewed in that light, any discussion of a solution is right on topic...JMHO.

I'm inclined to go for something like what Pete and/or Unicus suggested. While I understand where Skip comes from, I'm shivering with the thought of entering the entire LOTR crew OR having to vote on such contributions.

I think I am going to be an outcast here, but here goes.

I think we need less than what we have.  I do agree that there should be "open credits" somehow for the local database, but for the online, I think only the major players in crew credits.

We need a way of entering credits that make sense without the "literal" arguments that we have.

Sorry Hal, but I have to vote against open credits.

I personally don't care who the production accountant was, or the set painter, or the driver for actor x or the personal assistant to the personal assistant to the assistant of sub actor y...

I am sure that there are people that do care, but to enter and vote on said contributions would be a nightmare.

On a side note, if we have open credits for local, maybe a way to share profiles between users easily (peer sharing) for those credits entered outside what is accepted in the online.

And you think I don't. I've had nightmares for years at just the idea, but i haven't been able to come up with a better idea.
