I don't agree, hal. You could still participate and input the data that you WANT. And if ken set it up properly you could also update the data that you want. Who are you to determine what is of interest to other users. I am not, but there may be someone with an interest in Gaffers and such, and there may be others who would like to be able to share that data. Partial Contributions are always OK, as long as the data is correct. I find it disappointing that you would set up yourself up to deny other users the data that they might want to have and share. While I understand your nightmares, I have them too, I will not nor should the Online deny any user access to the data from the credits that he/she wants. Your comment smacks of "i'll take my toys and go home".

My big thing, just as when myself and Dan designed the Rules format, there was several goals and one of the big ones was to minimize arguments and problems.

I am not interested in dictating what other people want.  We have a solution for that already.  It's called custom roles and it works perfectly.

Not only would I not contribute, I would not vote on any contribution with crew credits.  I can just see a contribution including Nicolas Cage's driver..  Who gives a rat's ass?

I agree with Hal.  The more 'niche' credits Ken allows, the more he alienates the average user.  Honestly, how many people here really believe that the average user gives a darn about who the sound re-recording mixer was in their favorite film?  There's a reason the award shows don't televise every category.

If you ask me, and nobody did, we already have too many credits.  I can't see opening it up to a free-for-all.  As I said in the other thread, the best solution is to keep what we have with a few minor tweaks.  What we need are basic categories, with the ability to track and contribute the actual role, and custom role fields for those people that want to enter their favorite 'niche' credits.

No it doesn't, Hal. They can't share the custom data, nor can they accept an update without obliterating their data.  That's far from perfect.

Perhaps someone should do a poll regarding "Open Credits" and how "Open" they should be to see what the majority wants in case this ever goes into effect.

Again, unicus. Where does it say that the online is ONLY for the average user. The Online is to serve ALL users not just a select few as defined by you, Hal and rick. Again Personally, it is not my interest, I certainly have no interest in who the key grip wsa in Plan 9 From Outer Space, but someone MIGHT and someone else might wish to be able to share that data. As long as I am able to select that data in which I have an interest, then I don't care how much data is there.

Cubby, I don't think it is a poll issue. We are a small vbut vocal contingent of Profiler users, why should we put ourselves in the position of dictating to others what they can or cannot have. the OPnline should NOT serve MY needs and biases, nor should it serve YOURS, that is the job of our local databases. I would certainly not presume to be able to say that out 500,000+ users we have no one who might be interested in some particular credit or other which we do not cover under the current asystem. In point of FACT, we do KNOW exactly the opposite to be true. Frankly I am shocked at the selfishness being shown. If you don't want it then no one should be able to have it. What I am seeing is users who don't understand the difference between the Online and the local and they want the online to service them and everyone else go take a flying leap,

It is not a matter of dictating, it is a matter of practicality.

Programmers have to make these types of decisions every day.  This is not 'Credits Profiler', it is DVD Profiler.

Fully open credits, in my not so humble opinion, is a completely assinine concept.

Well since you choose insult. I find your idea to be childish and selfish beyond belief. For your information tjhe Movies and the DVDs are inestricablyy linked so that argument falls flat as a pancake.

Someone pointed out to me just how good you are are throwing out insults without others knowing you are doing it but i think this one will surprise even that person!

I don't know where it says that the online is ONLY for the average user...then again I never said that it was.  What I said was, "The more 'niche' credits Ken allows, the more he alienates the average user," and I believe that to be true.

Profiler can't be all things to all people.  Because there are more of them, the program should be tailored towards that demographic.  That doesn't mean the 'niche' groups should be ignored, but that is what custom credits are for.  Again, JMHO.

But those niche users can't share their custom data, Unicus.

I understand, my friend, perfectly. Believe me when i say I have worked through I think every possible permutation I can create to amke this work more effectively and not discriminate against ANY particular user group. I might even be willing to accept some form of limited creds which meet the criteria I have laid out, but I haven't been able to.

This isn't discrimination, it is practicality.  As I said, the program can't be all things to all people.  A line has to be drawn somewhere.  A balance has to be struck between the hardcore and the average.  If a balance can't be struck, you have to err on the side of the average user.

Again, JMHO.
