Is it me or does it seem that these cool packaging has just come to an end.

Sure we get some steel books from Best Buy or some little swag like a cd or something from Target or just different artwork on the slip cover from Best Buy or Walmart. But where are these really cool and unique packaging now?

I have some real cool ideas for cool packaging that they could have done for some movies/tv series. Perhaps we should start a thread about that.

Perhaps. Could you give some examples?

Off the top of my head.

The Seaview for the entire Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea series.
The mother ship from V for the complete 1980's tv series or mini-series
The Enterprise refit for Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The USS Reliant for Star Trek II
The Enterprise A for Star Trek VI
The Enterprise D for Star Trek Generations
The Borg Cube or Sphere for Star Trek First Contact
Enterprise E for Insurrection
The Scimitar for Star Trek Nemesis
The car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Titanic for the 100th anniversary next year, perhaps just a miniature instead of a case.

Most of these unique limited editions and various other DvDs in unique packing where released at that the height of the formats life cycle. Back then the economy was good as well which was a bonus.

Pirates of the Caribbean from Amazon.

Planet Earth: Limited Edition from Amazon.

Cars Director's Edition from Amazon.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.

I love the look of specialized packaging and the toys that come with some of them. I'm just not one who displays a lot of non-functional things otherwise I would likely seek them despite being "cheep plastic" instead of being made out of cast iron and covered in gold foil.

This is already cheaper than what I paid, maybe one day it will be worth more but it don't matter as I just had to have it and won't ever sell it anyway. It's the LE blu-ray set for those who haven't seen or heard of it. Pretty cool, esp. when lit up.

It;s like this thing almost never existed, I couldn't find much about it online execpt for mentions of it happening, no pics. From 2001, this Best Buy exclusive is beyond rare. I think it was available about 2 days before they sold out as discs with the film cels were the same price as those without them:

A few other oddites I have:

and probably my favorite all time, now with Blu-ray in place of dvd:

If anyone doesn't have Dark Knight on blu yet, I have 2 Target stores in my area, both still have 3 copies each of this (but the BD version):

They've been there forever, one has damaged packaging but the rest are fine. Normal price, $13, this week on sale for $10.

I'd jump on one, but I already have this version:
