Interesting digression.  It also makes some of Disney's latest...ummm, reinterpretations for lack of a better word, of their classic cartoons even more difficult to understand.  The golden Peter Pan produced in this last go-around is particularly odd.

Actually, I wasn't referring to sequels, but rather the reissues of the classic material.  The latest Peter Pan, in particular, has some of the oddest color timing of them all.  Yellows cranked up beyond belief, imbueing everything with a golden hue.  The indian's skin color was no longer red, a probable bow to political correctness.  There was quite the discussion amongst animation folks when it came out.  Every previous presentation ever released, either for the home or theatrical sported completely different color timing than this last release.

I've gotten to the point where I very closely read the reviews on Disney reissues these last couple of years.  Some of them have been great, but others have had some real questionable changes done to them.

My first experience with this film was the 1991 laser disc,, and I was blown away by the colors and vistas,, but as the laser disc phase came and went (along with my discs) I picked up the 1997 dvd and I was very disappointed in the colors .., till word came ( as the threads show) of a newer edition.,
So I Went with the HDDVD and was happily again enthralled with the vista's  and a different shade of hues that  made me very happy., let alone the 1080 resolution as well.,.
The earlier cropped dvd and LD was only (as vista vision is) 1:66, but the 2006 edition is a full 1:77 so the image is not 'as' cropped. Sound is only MONO 1.0 but strong and vibrant.

No, you're quite right. You'd need to upgrade before being able to really benefit from Blu-ray. Before you're ready to do that, I'd say: stick to DVD.
