I treat it the same way I read, left to right and top to bottom, so option 1.

I try imagining the fun you have reading a newspaper.

I hope that was a joke, otherwise it was just stupid.

I look for alphabetical order first.  If it exists i will follow that.  Otherwise Option 2.

Me too, but otherwise is option 1 in my case.

I'd say option 1, because if the credits go beyond the screen, you have to rewind to start on the second column.

I've alwways leaned towards 2 as it feels more like natural reading, but I have no issue with opition 1, as long as teh right data goes in.

I'll put it this way, if I'm auditing a title and come across this, and someone has used #1 for the existing, I won't bother re-ordering it if the names are all correct.

If it's alphabetical (either 1 or 2), then alphabetical. If not, I'd go for option 1.

It was a half-joke.

As stupid as the concept of a column, I suppose.

You are far too reasonable.

It was a half-joke.

And a completely stupid and unnecessary comment.

If you say so because I never said the concept of a column was stupid.  In fact, I never addressed columns at all.  I simply stated how I would treat it.  Apparently I am doing it wrong because, based on your post, columns are never read that way.

I'm currently doing the profile for Little Dorrit where the actors; indeed the crew as well; scroll from top to bottom with two columns. I'm using option 1 here because the credits disappear from top to bottom and are replaced with the next set of credits in a rolling scroll 12 times. Two columns, one actor at the top in the middle of the columns, five actors per column; about 132 actors and so far I've done 46. There's 18 Costume designers as well. This is only for Part One. This profile is going to take me a couple of days, I think!
In the end; Winning is the only safety.

I always look for an alphabetical order firstly, and if there is none I'll go with doing option 2.

A related question, what do you do with two credits on the screen, one in the lower left corner and one in the upper right?

Is it a "standard" top to bottom crawl, if so then top, but remember there are instances where filmmakers use reverse crawls.

Skip

I was thinking of a stationary screen, no crawling. I tend to give preference to top to bottom in that case (so first the complete top left to right or right to left whatever is appropriate, and then down). That is common to even languages that read from right to left.
