Isn't there also a principle that when in doubt, we use the copyright notice? The notice, at least on the complete series set says "X-Files."

But there is no doubt. The Rules clearly say:

Quote:
Use the title from the front cover.

The title on the front cover is clearly readable without the '-'. The opening title of each episode is spelled without the '-' also.

Exactly.

"X-Files" can go into the Original Title field.

How do you reckon that? I really don't think so - the rule on "original title" is: "Use the title from the film's credits." And as as the previous poster said:

So I don't see how we could possibly arrive at putting 'The X-Files' into the "original title" field.

Not quite. The foreign films rules applies since this is a Netherlands release of an US show.

Don't know if that would change anything, though.

T!M and Karsten:

Apart from the matter of the original title you both also say X Files for the "normal" title then?

It does seem that way, yes. Had you asked me a few days ago, I'd have been perfectly happy with 'The X-Files', as that's what the show is commonly referred to (even by Fox themselves). But this community has a long-standing tendency to try to do things different from how the rest of the world does it... Anyway: if there's no hyphen visible on either the cover or the screen, then I'd have to say that the rules make it pretty hard to add one in - despite my own preference.

I agree with T!M here.  'The X Files' as title, Original title blank.

Well, I think it's been pretty much agreed upon that The X Files is the way to go then. (I'm glad I asked because without guidance I probably would have opted for the vast majority.)

Just goes to show you, doesn't it?

I'll start with changing season 2 NL (that profile needs other work anyway) and see how it goes.

Cheers everyone for helping out.

It's a pretty sad commentary on us and our rules when everyone agrees that it should be in the database as The X Files while at the same time everyone agrees that the correct "official" title is The X-Files.

Given the rules we have, I can't argue against the decision made here.  But I certainly won't allow it in my database! I've just updated the title lock for all my X-Files profiles.

Yes, it does seem a bit weird, doesn't it? It can't be a good thing if the rules lead to an answer that, although technically correct, most people feel "just isn't right", as may be the case here (although there are quite a few non-NL profiles that already use X Files as I stated in the OP). That can't always be prevented though I suppose, no rules are perfect.

Anyway, I've made the first contributions to seasons 1 & 2, locality NL and pointed to this thread. I apologise to those of you who feel compelled to lock their profiles, but I can hardly pose the question and then ignore the results

I agree. It's weird that Fox uses The X-Files as title everywhere, except on the DVD covers and in episodes' title credits. Unfortunately (but in most cases fortunately) the rules concerning the titles are clear.

I completely agree.

I could, but I won't. Hint: The circled X is a graphical gimmick.

Unfortunately, that approach doesn't help if you don't own the DVDs yet and you do a search for the well-established title "X-Files" in the Add DVD by Title dialog. As I said in the J*A*G thread, locally you can do what you want and endlessly arguing over what should go into certain data fields just isn't worth the hassle, but the title field is a bit different, because you need it to find a profile in the first place.
