A shot in the dark:
You did not by any chance change anything with your language files, did you?
What's strange is that only some icons don't show the descriptions.
Try to reinstall your language file from here. Maybe that helps, at least it won't harm.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

*frowns* I tried that out and it didn't help. I installed the exact same program on my brother's computer (he has a very similar computer make-up to mine) and the text was fine which indicates that it's definitely a problem with my computer. I might try doing a windows xp repair and see if that fixes anything.

Thanks for the suggestion.. I can't wait to get this working again!

I eventually decided to do a Windows Repair on my XP and this fixed the problem, but I now have a few new problems that I've put in a new post.
