Disc IDs: Do not include any Disc IDs on the main profile - these are listed on each of the individual profiles

what has that got to do with wanting to use the location for the box sets? The location fields are personal so wouldn't be contributed anyway.

And as others have said - you don't even need to enter any information in the disc ids..

And even if someone did - that doesn't mean they will try and contribute it.

And I use the location slot to identify if the Box is on a particular shelf - so for me the Box is what is located.

As I said the answer has been provided, pauls, and I am sorry it is not the answer you waty or the explanation but it is the answer nonetheless. I am NOT saying you are wrong in your suggestion or dav4is, I am simply saying that is why it is today. Reminds me of people who simply want what they want to hear and any other answer is not suitable for them, even if its the right answer. Dav4is with all due respect, I would suggest you change your tag line, you are close to becoming it.

That is hardly an answer to my question in re WHY it was necessary to PREVENT entry of location in the absence of disc info.
Reference to the design of some physical equipment is not an answer -- or rather is an inanity.  Perhaps I want to specify the location of the empty box (of a box set).

There probably isn't a definite 'why'.  There was a request for the ability to track the location and slot for multi-DVD changers.  Ken fulfilled that request.  It probably didn't dawn on him, since the request was for the ability to track the 'disc' location, that people would want to track the box as well.

You can't plan for every contingency.  Yes, you can try, but it isn't possible to plan for them all.

Maybe I'm wrong (which I could be since I don't use this feature at all) but isn't the field supposed to be DISC Location & Slot?  It's not BOX location after all. So, to me, it's perfectly obvious why you have to have a disc id to have a disc location.  Now if the field were BOX location, or SET location, then it would make sense to allow a location without a disc.

You don't have to add the disc ID to use the location field, You do have to edit the profile and click on add disc and then click ok to save the change.

Point taken.  I forgot that this had been said earlier in this thread.

I'm not sure why you think I want any particular asnwer..

I don't care what the original purpose of the disk location field is - but I use it for disks in a disk binder and TV sets on a shelf. The information is kept quite nicely thank you very much.

so what that it's called disc location?

If I use it for box sets will I go to prison?

Its a location slot. Full stop. I think we can over analyse things. Lets just use the features and stop trying to stop ourselves using what's available.

No, I think capital punishment fits this crime.

I only ventured into this thread because the OPer seemed to be demanding an answer to why the feature was engineered deliberately to prohibit the use of location without a disc ID.  He just didn't like the answer that it was designed for people who wanted to locate discs not boxes so the disc requirement made sense for that purpose.
