The program runs LOCALLY, north and is separarted from the Online. You can change any of the names locally to ANYTHING you wish. For example, Add Name Li Gong and replace the entries for Gong Li and you can then search and sort as YOU wish. You lose the ability to contribute those titles as they would violate the rules, relative to Cast or Crew but. The Onlins is a data start point, YOU are in total control of your local data and can set it up ANY WAY YOU WISH. At the local level you are the man in charge and control and you follow your parameters, the Rules are for Contributions ONLY.

Sounds like wew need a Profiler 101 class.

I want Gong Li in my list of actors in the profile of the movies where she is, in accordance to asian way to show names. And I want to have Gong, Li in my sorted list of actors by surname, since Gong is her surname. The program cannot do that now. It is not a problem of online, I paid for a program to manage my collection of DVDs, and I put a request in the request forum. No more. If you don't like it, it's up to you, it's Ken's opinion that interests me.

None of us are EVER going to get ALL data pre-packaged in a form which we want to use it in. That's impossible. And , FYI, I was referring to YOU needing Profiler 101 clasas, you don't seem to understand the basics of the program versus the online and how they interact. That or you expect all your data to come in a form which you want and not have to touch it, a scary thought indeed.

We are also allowed to discus and recuss the merits of requests. I started out favoring surfeur's request, now i am not sure about it, based on his last comment and your not understanding the entire system. I have grave doubts this will achieve what we would all like to see.

Surfeur:

The program MOST CERTAINLY can do it RIGHT now. The Online will NOT deliver it to you in that form, but you are free to do whatever you wish.

Try it anyway you wish to do it and you will discover that it works. YOU are in total control of YOUR data and can do ANYTHING you want to with it.

You can even say if you want to, screw three name fields, I am going to use only one.<shrugs>

Even the single name field leaves us with the same dilemma:
what goes first and last and in the middle:
  • Caroline Lee Johnson
  • Caroline Johnson Lee
  • Lee Caroline Johnson
  • Lee Johnson Caroline
  • Johnson Lee Caroline
  • Johnson Caroline Lee

  • hope i did not miss any

Sorry, but with a single name field, you simply enter the name exactly a it appears on the screen.

    Period!

    No, it cannot.

Edit : In fact it sometimes works... for Li Li, for example...

LOL, this is unbelievable, surfeur. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! This has become far too incredible to be believed.

I once upon a time considered holding online classes for profiler, maybe I need to revisit it.

I have to agree with Giga Wizard.

    I don't see the point.

What problem is being solved here?  Possible "double-barreled" names could still be parsed two different ways.

The only answer is a single name field.

But unless you sacrifice sorted names by family name completely a single field still wouldn't solve the double-barrelled problem either. I personally don't mind what order the names are displayed in, but others I know really don't want to lose that.
And when I suggested a single name field in this forum, it was extremely unpopular - this seems a reasonable compromise.

    @skip
Sorting isn't a local issue, it's a program issue. We have no control over how the cast and crew names are displayed in the "edit profile" window.

I understand that a single field causes the loss of the ability to sort by last name, since there is no "last name"any more.  That's the cost of solving a slew of other problems; unless KEn wanted to add a "Last Name" field locally for people to use for sorting.

However, I do not understand your statement that a single field would not solve the "double-barreled" name problem.  I'm not talking about two different credits (Lee Johnson vs. Lee-Johnson).  Under what circumstance would a single name field not solve the double barreled name problem?  Examples would help.

You seem to have separated my two statements, but they are connected:
I said that the double-barrelled name problem would not be solved unless you sacrificed sorting by last name.
I would be more than happy with a single name field together with a local sorting field, however the idea got blasted when I suggested it in the forum a while ago.

    Ahh...got it.

Unfortunately, a single name field has been ignored ever since it was abandonned years ago.

Sometimes, we get exactly what we ask for.

You can do all that right now, north. <scratches head> As with anything there are always going to be trade-offs, the user decides on his own parameters and how he wants the data to appear. As I said if you believe that One name field will solve the problems for you, you can do that right NOW. the trade off in this case is having the data your way and not being able to Contribute it, that's your decision not mine. But don't make more of this than is there.

    Example : Miami Vice

    List of actors :

    Colin Farrell
    Jamie Foxx
    Gong Li    (which is correct)
    ...

In this case, in the edit list of actors, you have Gong Li sorted among L. (which is not correct)

If you want Gong Li sorted among G, (which is correct) you have to enter Li Gong, and then in the list of actors for Miami Vice, you have:

    Colin Farrell
    Jamie Foxx
Li Gong    (which is not correct)
    ...

There is no satisfying solution. But perhaps I missed it. In that case, please explain...

Two names and a check box (to reverse sorting). Please have a look to my first post.

But it could be done with three name fields just the same.

Li Gong Credited AS Gong Li

while that would work locally, it wouldn't however (necessarilyt) work in the online because it would go against using most credited (if Gong Li is most credited) form as the common name.

however, the point I want to make in this thread is that a) any 'solution' will most likely not solve all the problems, if only because people do things differently. What I think needs to be taken into account though is something that works for most people. So that they can still contribute, otherwise we are cutting down the number of people who contribute cast\crew (making more work for everyone) and plenty of people already don't contribute in this area because of its complexities.

Additionally, if I have Gong Li in my database as Li Gong, and an update to cast in a movie she's in comes down, I need to either, manually make any changes to cast I agree with, or accept the entire cast update and then change Gong Li back to Li Gong.

as far as sorting/display goes i think the best solution is probably some combination of an actor specific display order (as has been brought up in the past) and a local sort name field.
