And obviously appell isn't willing to even give the smallest info about his installation. I'm working as an administrator and up to now never met anything like a standard XPPro installation. All computers are different by hardware setup and software configuration. If we don't get at least the absolute basics (CPU-manufacturer and type, graphics, mainboard chipset, installed software and software running while attempting the installation) neither we, nor anyone else will be able to help.

@ appell: BTW this, as you slightly disrespectful called it, "public forum" is stuffed with computer professionals of all levels, the knowhow that can be met here is quite unique outside of technets.

Not unwilling, just don't understand why the people who sold me the software can't help me. I don't think referring to a forum that anyone is able to join as a "public forum" is being disrespectful. Is it not public? I am very impressed with the feedback, and I definitely do not want to insult anyone here. I am starting to understand why the tech pointed me here, but that doesn't excuse him just giving up.

Just for reference, I'm a computer systems engineer, but my game is *nix and networking, so these Windows breeds frustrate the heck out of me. When I say standar, I mean I popped in the install CD, booted, and folllowed the instructiions. Then I ran all of the updates, including SP2.

The machine is an EPIA with a Via Samuel 2 CPU 800MHz and 512MB RAM.

Its dedicated to my Homeseer installation, hence the Mini-ITX. Homeseer and DVD Profiler are the only things that run on it, and yes, I tried installing DVD Profiler first AND second. I'm frustrated because I was running DP2.3.1 for a couple of years until I was forced to upgrade, which is what is killing me.

thanks,
ken

Appell,

Since you are used to running Unix I'm wondering if this is a permissions problem. With Unix, (or at least when I used Unix at work) everything would run whilst the machine was locked down. And that was no problem - but with windows XP it needs to be installed under an administrator account (and I personally run it using an administrator account).

Can you just confirm what type of account you used to install it?

I only have one account set up and it has full administrator permissions. To be certain, I also logged in as administrator and tried there. No dice.

OK, let's see,
for starting the safe mode of Windows you have to press the "F8"-button immediately after the machine went through the BIOS (shortly before the Windows logo appears).
When you do so please login on the "administrator" account first and try the installation here. If the installation ran fine log in on your account afterwards (still in safe mode) and see if the program starts.

If "Yes" the problem should be solved.
If any of these fails please come up again.

Since I'm not quite sure what you mean with "Homeseer" ist it this? If "Yes", does it start automtically at Windows Startup? Did you disable it during the installation of DVDPro?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

The installation is not the issue, but I'll give this a try. Its the startup that is the problem. And yes, that URL is the Homeseer that I speak of. Its what I use for home automation. I had problems with DP before I even installed HS, so I've pretty much ruled that out as the problem.

If you have an invalid entry in the registry, that maybe a problem also. Uninstalling and reinstalling won't help if the uninstall doesn't completely wipe out these entries.

I would uninstall first. Then run regedit, (click on Start -> Run and type Regedit) look in the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ and see if you can find an entry called "Invelos Software". If so, delete it, then reinstall. Make sure you have uninstalled first though.

I know this has been mentioned before but perhaps I didn't catch it.  Does it crash with the default empty database or are you trying to open some sort of restored database?  Frankly, if its just a vanilla install with an empty database, I'm at a loss.  Can't say that I've seen or heard of this one before.

Can you hook up a debugger and see where it's crashing?

have you got the latest drivers and bios for your mother board:
VIA Embedded Boards - Download Center
Have you the possibility to increase the memory on this motherboard? 512 > 1 GB and could you test this before you purchase these? It seems the EPIA motherboard is verry picky with its memory modules.
Wich mother board is it exactly? Mini-ITX

EPIA SN
EPIA EX
EPIA EK
EPIA EN
EPIA CN
EPIA LT
EPIA LN
EPIA PE
EPIA M
EPIA ML
EPIA

Another path to investigate would be the Dispaly resolution your running on. Is it VGA standard or a TV resolution.

All in all it sounds like a corrupt database problem to me.

@zymurgist: Did you and if yes how did you import your 2.x database?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

@zymurgist

Please try the following: Go to your folder "My Documents".

There should be a folder "DVD Profiler". Correct? Open it.
There should be a folder "Databases". Correct? Open it.
There should be a folder "Default". Correct?

If so, please rename "Default" to something else and try to run DVD Profiler.

If all goes well there should be an error message like this:
