I'm sure you can think of 1001 replies to anything I say about backup practices. But it doesn't change the idea that using SOUND backup practices will increase your chances many fold of having your data survive a computer disaster. No strategy can be 110% PERFECT forevermore!! S*** happens, even to the best prepared. And no strategy can save data from a VERY STUPID or IGNORANT user. Those persons will have Data loss because they have no idea want they are doing. Perhaps they will learn from disaster & perhaps not.

I'm working as sysadmin in an environment with thousands of XP machines using hundreds of different software. All users use their computers with users rights, so tweaking ACLs to make some badly coded software to work with those limited user-rights is somehing you can't calll...mmm...fun
They don't teach you everyday backup procedures??
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Here are some:

1. backup to more than 1 place
2. backup to an internal Hard Drive other than your OS drive (C:\)
3. backup to a writable CD or DVD
4. backup to an external Hard Drive
5. backup to a USB Flash Drive
6. backup to an online site
7. establish time(s) & day(s) to do the backups & STICK to the schedule
8. TEST your backups once in a while to be sure that they work

Following these suggestions about backup practices should help keep your Data safe.

If they don't they SHOULD teach you sound backup procedures! Otherwise your going to suffer a major Data loss one day & be a VERY unhappy camper about it.

Why bother, we have backup-admins for that
Term SOUND was (and still is) unknown to me.

In such a large environment, do you guys really think that all users do their backups by themselves? We have no need to backup workstations, since no work data is located on workstation drives, just OS and Programs. File servers run Shadow Copy for the first aid, data is also cached to backup servers discs where it goes to tapes. File servers are also clustered onsite and off-site with real time file replication...basically they are DR-sites.
I think our data pretty well secured...even if I have no idea what term "sound" stands for.

Speaking along the lines of being able to create files in the root, it's also a good idea to not delete files you are not familiar with if they exist in the root without investigating them first.

Say, for example, "NTLDR".  Now if the Microsoft developers left in the blasted vowels considering that file names 8 characters or less are safe regardless of drive format, I would have noticed that it stood for "NTLOADER" or the file that lets your computer boot.

Yup, got the point. Because you capitalized the word SOUND, I understood it as "To get most out of the IT management, you should follow ITIL practices". Where ITIL stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, which is a actual standard for doing things. Wonder why I havent heard about it before
