I try to avoid any film which involved Oliver Stone. I'm certain there are some I own -- but none deliberately.

Just out of curiousity, why is this? Based on a personal dislike of the man, or you've discovered you simply don't like his movies?

I'm asking because while I can see disliking a certain director's work, most people of his caliber will strike gold on certain moments of their career. In his case (although I like some of his other stuff too) I'd say Platoon is that moment.

I love movies -- I was a film student... I studied to be camera operator, lighting director, art director, sound, editor, foley walker, director, and producer. At the same time, I took film history and criticism classes. I can honestly say, that (with one notable exception) I've never walked out on a film I had never seen before prior to the end of the film.

That one exception was the Oliver Stone film about the radio talk show host... what was its title? (excuse me while I google Stone)... thank you, "Talk Radio". About 20 minutes in, I became so frustrated by Stone's direction, which I found heavy handed and unpleasant, I left the theater, and got my money back. (They gave me a pass to the theater, not my cash, but I saw a better film in 1989 instead.) I suppose my dislike of Eric Bogosian's acting might have aided my dislike of the film.

I look over my DVDs, and I think I own only one that Stone was involved with: "Joy Luck Club", where he was an executive producer. I sort of like "Conan" but I think the script is its weakest part. I dislike "Platoon" and "Wall Street" and "JFK" and "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Natural Born Killers" and "Any Given Suday" immensely. I find them painful to watch on so many levels -- I sincerely am at odds with the politics of every one of them, find them bogged down in bombastic portrayals of characters I dislike, doing things I try to avoid, and I find the angles at which each shot is composed offputting, the lighting unilluminating, and generally they all make me itch.

His ability to steal books from the public library ought to have no influence on my personal dislike for him, but it does.

I have no problem with anyone else admiring his work. Please enjoy it all you wish.

But I have grown to the point where if I am never subject to viewing anything of his again, I will die happier for that lack.

Sorry.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Cliff

I know, what you mean...

I have many unwatched movies in the shelf. I bought them with full price, now most of them are much cheaper now

Oh well, yes I know - I'm nuts, because I do it again and again

Church of Scientology got the videos removed from YouTube and various other sites, which resulted in this.

They may have removed them, but it appears they keep coming back. I watched the whole 40 minutes of it earlier today (I would say the actual Cruise video is about 20-25 minutes). I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention, but it seemed to me the whole thing didn't make much sense at all; I had no clue what he was talking about at any given point.

After that I followed bbursiek's link and watched some of the spoofs. Some of them were really funny.

anything with mel gibson in it or directing it--regardless of how classic or iconic.

anything with charlton heston--regardless of how classic or iconic.

that doesn't mean i haven't seen some of the classic or iconic; i just won't touch them nowadays.

and yes, cruise is making it more and more difficult to enjoy films he's in: the only one i own is interview with a vampire, and i don't know if i can stomach it anymore.

yeah, i even yelp and turn the channel when i see steven seagal...

I can't say that I have any such reserverations. Although there are categories that I don't like too much (horror for instance) and where I have very few films.

And as far as I know I don't own any movie older than 1960 and very few older than 1970, but that has nothing to do with "I would never buy" just with a lack of interest.

quick - go and get "12 Angry Men" (1957)..

A really great film! If you like this genre I would recommend as well "Witness for the Prosecution (1957)" and "Inherit the Wind (1960)"

to me, Steven seems to be the same in most all of his movies

You mean like this?

I have nonetheless movies from him, he is a good fighter.

He's king of the understated!

Actually don't own any of his movies, but I bet he's more fun than Adam Sandler... (which I do own)

Funny I just checked and I don't have any Steven Seagal movies.

What with all the DVD's I have I thought I might have picked up one of the earlier ones.

Most of todays comics, I just don't find many of them funny, especially any of their second ones. They just  blow it all in their first one and have nothing new to say.

If the film is good I would not let any actor or director spoil it for me. There are lot of asses in the movie industry. Just because they are famous they think their political opinion or any opinion means something.

I don't like the dopers, bullies and wife beaters, some have been in some good movies.
