| Posted: | | | | Quoting Prof. Kingsfield: Quote: But Martian that is a language base argument, not an argument which is based upon the data. Placement of diacriticals which do not actually appear On screen is purely fictitious, plain and simple, This is the part of your argument I just don't get. Let's take FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT as an example. If I convert that to Francois Truffaut, only the 'F' and the 'T' actually appear on screen. The rest is based upon an interpretation of the data. If François Truffaut is "purely fictitious," isn't Francois Truffaut just as ficticious? The only difference, at least the only difference I can see, is that one misrepresents it with a 'c' while the other misrpresents it with a 'ç'. The fact that the conversion is language based doesn't change the fact that the on screen data is misrepresented in both cases...or am I missing something here. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Quote: Just so we are clear, the solution I am thinking of is "François Truffaut [Francois Truffaut]". Actually in this case it is the solution for a credit 'Francoit Truffaut' because 'François Truffaut' is the common name for this person. But I guess you are correct, he has suggested this even for the case when there is only a single name variant. IMO this could partially work but would be to complicated. Fine in theory, but would totally screw up the CLT in practice. A program update that gets the system to see e, è, é, ê and ë all as the same letter would I think work much better and wouldn't require a mass change to profiles. I agree. |

Please I want to hear some answers You forgot option 4) you don't believe it is the single most destructive issue to come up. That would be my answer. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. | Posted: | | | | Ok I appreciate your response, martian, this extends far beyond Yves and his ...no I won't say it.
This will also affect Asian names, goodbye Chow yun Fat as Credited, hello Yun Fat chow, now we are no longer dealing with the film credits, the data is now based on I don' know what. And five years worth of work by all of us is down the tubes. We will be fllooded with users trying to get THEIR cultural issue recognized. Even in the states, Martian, is it Bobbi Jo// or Bobbi/ Jo/, depends on where she's from the Deep South probably Bobbi Jo// the Northeast likely Bobbi/Jo/. Say goodbye to profiler and say hello to the new IMDB which is ruled by user preferences and no real data. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

Say goodbye to profiler and say hello to the new IMDB which is ruled by user preferences and no real data. I am sorry, but those are completely different issues. There is no provision, in the rules, for interpreting the order of the data. If the on screen data is Chow Yun Fat, we have to enter it as Chow Yun Fat. We can't, no matter how hard anybody tries, misrepresent the data. There is, however, a provision for converting all uppercase words, into mixed case. In this case, we have no choice but to misrepresent the data. Name parsing isn't even covered by the rules so, unfortunately, is a free-for-all. The only upside is that, no matter how you parse the name, the data is accurately represented...as long as it wasn't in all caps. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | NO it is not martian. At the ciore of Yves' argument is "I am French and we do things this way" and We spell things this way, it is a cultural argument, exactly the SAME argument that has raged over Asian names for so many years and why I came up with my solution which allows for the culture without the damage that your change would affect and you would not be able to stop it. Profiler would in very short order become useles, like I said I don't Contribute anymore I don't care. I am fighting to save a program I happen to like a lot, if you have your way, I will sit back and i will watch the carnage and one day I will come back and say Congratulations, I tried to warn you.<shrugs> | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! I frankly don't care whether you appreciate it or not, my friend. that's the way i see it and your second answer confirms it. You believe that this can be done and it will have absolutely no impact. You could not be more wrong. Watch if Yves has his way, it will not be long before Taro and or xradman start saying my turn, what about my culture. To me this is a very serious threat to the future of the program and I am trying to defend it.The future of the program outweighs whether i tweaked your nose or not, Though frankly I did not expect that from YOU. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! Now, where does that get us? Nowhere. All that does is add to the animosity. Once again, in your opinion. In my opinion, entering names properly will only make the program better. In addition, please be so kind as to remember this the next time you complain about getting your nose tweaked. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Please I want to hear some answers Personally, I do not subscribe to your "the sky is falling" description of the issue! I will answer your questions here the same as I did in the other thread: Quoting hal9g: Quote: None of the above.
I know that and I care.
However, getting the data correct and respecting that others have a real problem with entering incorrectly spelled words in their language is more important than the amount of work required to get it correct. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |
