Back to topic. Gerri told us in rules forum that menu selected, remote selected and burned/forced subtitles are all contributable.

But I was told earlier in this thread by Woola that I was disregarding the rules by submitting remote selected subtitles. You know what though. From now on I agree, I'll link other users to the relevant forum post. It's not available to all you say? Great, so now some people will wrongly vote no believing the forum post quoted earlier here is the be all and end all.

Thanks Kulju though as that is handy information. The subtitle rules, essentially, don't need updating.

I would like to see the program updated to allow an indication of "forced" subtitles, as I will avoid them if at all possible.

I wouldn't go that far, Hal.  But i do think we need to have clear indicators of exactly what the data represents, which at the moment we don't.

It would be a nice update though. Seen as we add burnt in subtitles, why not be able to note that they are?

Agreed, I'd like to know if subtitles are forced or burned-in.  Both are annoying.

Some of us have the wisdom to know the difference, while others are still in discovery mode.

That doesn't make either group right or wrong, simply at a different point in the journey.

If the journey's end is simply submitting to the "I give up" part, I'll stick with the "courage to change the things I can" part of the saying.

This is not to take a swipe at you (promise, you're totally one of my favorite posters here!) but to me, fighting to change things for the better always has, and always will be the right thing to do. Giving up because you're tired and no one has listened to you even though what you have to say is something worth listening to? To me... well, I wouldn't call it wrong, but it moves closer to that side. It's everyone's personal decision, but I for one don't think giving up should really be an option.

Really though, I'm finding it hard to wrap my head around. Some people would rather put up with the endless crap parade that floats down the halls of the forums on a daily basis, rather than lobby for something as simple as a change in the rules? For something as simple as an answer from Ken or Gerri? Gerri finally answered a question earlier today in the rules forum. Problem solved. I can't imagine it took more than a few minutes of typing, max, to solve the problem. Had it been solved two days ago, the endless personal attacks on everyone wouldn't have been an issue.

Just not wrapping my head around it....

I voted other and here is my explanation/opinion on the matter:

Subtitle tracks should be recorded if they transcribe the dialogue or a commentary track so that you can understand the movie or the commentary track if you are hard of hearing or do not understand the language of the movie.

Subtitles that only transcribe a sign-post or similar would not have to be added.

I do not think it should matter if they are selectable by the menu or not. If you actually need the subtitles I am sure you will go to the trouble to use the remote or change the settings if you have to.

I do think that both regular or forced subtitles should be recorded even if they are not strictly a part of the dvd. This is easily documented with a checkbox for forced or maybe even a short comment field. It is extremely helpful to know even burnt in subtitles and a lot of people want to know if subtitles are forced. (This was such a big issue some years back that Discshop in Sweden added forced subtitles to their search options so people could avoid such releases if they wanted to.)

As for SDH, yes we need a checkbox for that too. If I were able to have it my way I would like some way to point out if the SDH subtitle track uses two or three lines since I find the three line ones in the middle of the screen annoying. So far I have only seen the three line version on some BD titles from Universal - Coraline and Love Actually. I think they are supposed to be similar to CCs. I suspect that people who are hard of hearing maybe appreciate the three line SDH subtitles and also would like to have this information in the database.

Let me end by saying that some people really *need* subtitles and that for those users the database could be a valuable resource since not that many shops list subtitles or readable back cover scans. Therefore I do not see why we would need to be so strict about whether or not the subtitle is a DVD or movie feature as long as it is properly documented.
