| Posted: | | | | In Italian when capitalizing names with accents, the diacritical is either removed completely or an apostraphe is sometimes added to the right of the accented character. For example, in the TV series "Rome", the name Manfredi Aliquò is credited as MANFREDI ALIQUO'. As another example, in the film 'The Leopard", Marino Masé is credited as MARINO MASE'. In the case of "Rome", the actor is credited onscreen as MANFREDI ALIQUO' for all his episodes. But he is credited inconsistently in the database even within the same profiles, sometimes as Manfredi Aliquo' other times as Manfredi Aliquò or even Manfredi Aliquó. His actual name is "Manfredi Aliquò" if his IMDB and showreel are to be trusted. Ken has stated to only include accents in names when they appear. In these cases, the accent does appear, but should this be entered as Manfredi Aliquò, which is technically what the credit is, or Manfredi Aliquo', which makes no sense but is exactly as it appears? | Posted: | | | | In Italy the apostrophe stands for the diacritical sign, as many people don't know how to type accented capital letters. And with old printers was almost impossible to print accented letters, so the apostrophe was used instead. And the habit stuck :D | | | Laura |

MARINO MASE' = Marino Mase' | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Locally, I would put Manfredi Aliquò and lock the profile.
For the online, Pete is correct - exactly as credited, except not in all caps.
If however Manfredi Aliquò is the common name then you would go with Manfredi Aliquò [Manfriedi Aliquo']. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield | | | Last edited: by Danae Cassandra |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks guys. I see now this is probably no different from any other accent issue. I just couldn't wrap my brain around that damned apostrophe. Even if I don't like it, it should be Manfredi Aliquo' according to the rules. In this case, it looks like his common name would be Manfredi Aliquo'. CLT is showing 1 other title (7 profiles) under "Manfredi Aliquo" and 2 other titles (2 profiles) under "Manfredi Aliquò". He's credited as Manfredi Aliquo' in 2 seasons of Rome with 140 profiles. | | | My DVD/Blu-ray Collection My Letterboxd Page | | | Last edited: by Rizor |

MARINO MASE' = Marino Mase' Absolutely ridiculous. Manfredi Aliquò is the correct option. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

So, it will need a common names thread. Many users will spend hours checking credits , and in one, two, or three years, it will be possible to decide which variant is the most credited... and it might change in the future. A ten second search on Google italian pages gives the correct name. Ten seconds with an immediate correct result, versus twenty(?) hours with probably an incorrect result in two(?) years | | | Images from movies |

Ten seconds with an immediate correct result, versus twenty(?) hours with probably an incorrect result in two(?) years If people follow the rules for cast and crew contributions and quit mining IMDB or deciding to enter what they think the name should be, and contribute what is the on-screen credit. We wouldn't need to have so many common name searches. |

| Posted: | | | | Wait, so it's not in the rules, but a buried forum post?
That's absurd.
Don't understand Addicted2DVD's attitude. "Ken said so on the forum once, so I don't want it changed. I just want to follow what Ken says to the letter, and make sure I tell everyone else to do so as well."
Well I for one question that clarification, and say that in this case, entering Manfredi Aliquo' is absurd. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | Wait one minute! I do not tell anyone what to contribute... All I do is tell you what is the right way per Rules and Ken's clarification of the rules! From there is up to the contributor if they are going to follow the rules or not.
But any contribution I do will be per the rules (yes it is in the rules... only the clarification Ken made... stating what the rule means is in a forum post) and Ken's clarification of said rules.
And anything that comes up for me to vote on that don't follow the rules (and clarifications) will get a no vote from me. | | | Pete |
