we,  as a family always like to play along with our preprinted ballot sheets..

Last night I got 14 right out of 24 .. my 2 major misses  were director and supporting actor and 8  odd ones like foreign / sound mixing/adapted SP/orignal score /documentary short /live action short/ & both music catagorys. .....

Happy with all that won? Or was there some that didnt win, that you wanted to see win?
Personally, i cant wait to see The Artist, Hugo and ofc George Clooney's movies The Ironlady should be a good one too! Good to see Meryl finally win one again!
Hoped Clooney would win a bit more, bot other then that. Pretty good Oscars this year i think!

I don't care for the Oscars. The winners are not selected by a good enough diversity of people, and instead most are old men. I wonder what would win if they had a varied type of voters?

I just finished adding the current Filmfare awards (Indian Oscar) to the data for my awards plugin, and I have to admit, that I am way more curious checking out some of the nominees there, than I am about the movies nominated for the Oscars. I even had some of the movies already on my wishlist and now my wishlist has grown even more.

Isn't that why they have the People's Choice, Golden Globes, Critics' Choice, SAG, etc. awards?  The Oscars are not my thing either, mainly because what they thing is outstanding, isn't always outstanding for me, but such is the nature of 'old school' Hollywood.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

This part of the slashfilm story says it all IMO:
Quote:
However, when the voting population consists so overwhelmingly of a single demographic, that demographic’s general preferences can’t help but be overrepresented — which in turn encourages Hollywood to keep making and promoting certain types of films, filmmakers, actors, etc., while overlooking others.

I watched but thought it was kind of boring. Very tame, no excitement. Missed the songs being played for best song and thought some of the presenters had too big of a role. Billy Crystal wasn't bad, but didn't make me laugh out loud too much. Think they were trying hard not to bomb like the last couple years and picked the safe bet; that made it very bland for me. At least I knew who he was. I guess his name was trending on Twitter because people didn't know who he was. Have they not watched the Princess Bride? Or any of the other movies that he made huge during the 80s and 90s? That's a bit sad.

I only saw a couple of the main films this year. Do plan on picking up Hugo even though I haven't watched it yet but between the previews and the awards, think it'll be worth it.

Glad Meryl Streep won...thought she's deserved it in the past and she hasn't won it, so glad she did.

Does anyone know if they ever put the documentary shorts together on DVD? They seemed interesting, but nothing I'd have access to living where I am. Are they online at all?

I quit going to the movies. So unless they are in my DVD collection (Moneyball, The Help, Rango, Kung Fu Panda 2, Harry Potter..., Bridesmaids) I can't give an honest opinion. Billy Crystal did a better job. Seems to work better with a comedian hosting.

Fair enough I've heard that too! But this year, i had to watch it. Lot of intersting movies  this year i thought, and finally Meryl Streep got an Oscar again (after 17 nominates, and now 3 wins!) I kinda like her work alot And so do i with Clooney's work too! So i hoped him would win more. But the silent movie "The Artist" is looking good, looking forward to it coming out

Sounds pretty cool! Dont know if i have anything from that side of the world. You got any good ideas for what to get? If you have any good one's in your collection, or any you just have seen in the awards?

Thanks

I seem to remember wrong then. I always understood the winners are selected by all members of the academy whereas the nominees are only selected of the same guild(?)...?
