| Posted: | | | | I have the title "Liam", and PowerDVD is giving me the following information for the audio:
Audio Attributes: Audio Coding mode: Dolby Digital Sampling Rate: 48kHz Audio application mode: Not specified Number of Audio channels: 2 Bitrate: 192 Kbps Number of Audio streams: 1
The existing entry for this title has "Dolby Digital" and "Surround" selected, and looks like it might be wrong given the above.
Is there any discussion thread here that lists either all the valid combinations or on the other hand all the Format+Format combinations that are automatically invalid? |

| Posted: | | | | PowerDVD (and many other apps) don't give accurate readings regarding Dolby Surround vs Dolby 2.0. PowerDVD always says Dolby 2.0 for a regular film.
My stereo receiver easily distinguishes the difference, even when computer based tools won't. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | I opened the VOB file directly and it still showed Dolby Digital 2.0.
Doing the same thing with Media Player Classic showed AC-3
VLC showed A52 (Dolby Digital) stereo. |

VLC showed A52 (Dolby Digital) stereo. PDVD shows "Audio: Dolby Digital 2.0" for stereo, "Audio: Dolby Digital Surround 2.0" for surround. VLC shows "Channels: Stereo" for stereo, "Channels: Dolby" for surround: MediaInfo adds "Dolby Digital" if the surround flag is set: | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. For this first you have to understand that there are many misconceptions about Dolby Surround, it is not automatrically either 5.1 or 4 channel. The early Surround was simply a matrixed form Dolby 2.0. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

No. Those 2-Channels can just as well be an old Dolby Pro Logic Track. And that would very well be "surround". cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | I guess what I'm trying to sort out is whether there is a right answer to what goes into the audio tracks, and what software tool will give me an unambiguous match to what I should put in those pulldowns.
For now, I still don't know. |

There certainly is a right answer, for Dolby Surround it is just extremely hard to figure out. So my first approach would be: as long as you can't prove the current data wrong, leave it as it is. Instead of going for software in this particular instance you should have a look at what your DVD-player and your AV-receiver have to say for the matter. cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

Depending on the settings, my receiver manages to produce "Surround" sound from audio tracks that aren't even "Stereo", but true "Mono"... | | | Last edited: by T!M |

Perhaps, you as the man who has "THX certificate" and have worked in "video industry" 25 years can enlight me? |

| Posted: | | | | This is one area where I think Profiler asks us to provide too much information. I would be happy with just a 2.0 Mono and a 2.0 Stereo/Surround option, since the latter can be very difficult to determine. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

For now, I still don't know. Where's your problem? PDVD will, VLC will, MediaInfo will. If still unsure you could countercheck a fourth time with ProjectX (shows "DS" or "notDS" for 2.0 channel tracks): For B-rDs you'll have to break the information protection first, though. Then you can also use BDInfo. All the software tools will always deliver the same result. Just do me one favour: Do not use your ears for detection. They're most probably analogue. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. [Ken Cole, DVD Profiler Architect] |

| Posted: | | | | I'm currently working on "The Luzhin Defence". The audio menu gives me:
"English (Dolby Surround)" and "English (Dolby Digital)" at the audio menu.
Per each selection, PowerDVD provides:
English (Dolby Surround) selected Dolby Digital 2.0 192Kbps
English (Dolby Digital) selected Dolby Digital 5.1 448Kbps
No mention of "Surround".
From VLC ...
Audio Track 1: Commentary.
Audio Track: 2 Audio Device: Stereo (options: Mono | Stereo | 2 Front, 2 Rear | 5.1 | A/52 over S/PDIF) Audio Channels: Stereo / 5.1
Audio Track 3 Audio Device: Stereo Audio Channels: Dolby Surround
How should I complete the audio tracks section of the existing profile, which has three tracks and no mention of surround? |
