I noticed 2 people have voted No to my contribution of new cover images for The Shadow.  The existing images are square (CD shaped) not DVD shaped at all, and the colors are way too bright for the actual image as it is in reality.  The images I contibuted look exactly like the copy of The Shadow that's in my collection.  Just curious as to why 2 people have rejected the new cover scans.  Is my DVD different than yours?

As I said, I'm just curious.  I would think it would be preferable to have images that look like the actual DVD, in the DVD Profiler database.      -kd5-

You have to type in a reason when you vote "no". What reasons did these 2 users put?

Edit: in case you don't know, when you're looking at your "My Contributions" page you can click on the actual votes to see more details.

They stated why in the  voting.  They are also correct in there votes.

When this was initially released in 1997, It came out in a jewel case (Strange I know, but what can you say).

The Cover you are introducing, is a re-release from 1998.

This difference you can see in the copyright block near the bottom.

So even though yours actually may be preferable to some, the original release cover must remain..

Exactly. I do prefer the scans submitted (and have the full sized, DVD cover locked locally) but per rules, it's what was first released and it was in the jewel case. Look at the contribution notes for this and you'll see a couple others have tried to submit this as well.

To expmaed a bit on what TheMovieman said.

These should be displayed when you do your submission.

You can also check ahead of time by clicking on the "View Contributors" icon in DVDP while viewing the profile.  When the window pops up click on "View contribution notes" and it will bring up all the notes in your web browser.

I understand the reasoning behind the rules regarding these cover scans as they are but I still think it's silly to have scans for a DVD that, when initially released, came in packaging that was prehistoric (as far as the current accepted DVD packaging/cover images go).  To cling to that antiquated image just does not compute.  It's the only cover scan(s) in my collection that look that way.

Oh well, I plan to leave my DVD-sized scans intact in my collection because, IMHO, that's the way they should be, it just doesn't look right any other way.

Thanks for pointing these facts out to me though, I appreciate it...         -kd5-

This line of thinking just doesn't compute...for me at least.  I am not after uniformity, I am after an accurate representation of what I own.  If it was released with a square cover, then that is how the cover should look in profiler.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

I'm all for locking images locally so I'm good with the rules as they stand.  Just wanted to point out the irony of your statement of wanting an accurate representation of what you own.  I would bet a very small minority of owners of this title actually have the jewel case version.  So, for the majority of people, what they own is actually not being represented.

Here are the facts, you can have whatever covers you wish in your local database. But as far as the Online database is concerned we have always only been able to deal with ONE cover set, only ONE, maybe someday this will be different but not yet. That means that we accept ONLY the Original released cover images, I don't care how prehistoric you think they are, you don't like them, use what you want in your local.

I really wish the system could handle re-release cover scans so everyone could just download the version of the cover that they own. But until such a thing is possible... I agree with the way the rules are now.

Until then consider sharing your re-release scans. There is currently a couple sites members here has made to do just that.. you can check them out in the following threads...

I'd recommend using Mithi's site. It has a nicer layout.

I meant no disrespect to anyone who has the original jewel case packaging.  I only think it's absurd that it was packaged like that in the first place.  And after the packaging changed, it's my firm belief that the UPC should have changed as well, that would have solved the problem nicely.  So, for one year, way back in 1997, this was packaged in a jewel case.  One year later, 13 years ago, it graduated to the standard DVD case.  I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the people who own this DVD own it in the standard DVD case.  I still think they should've changed the UPC...

Oh well, nothing to be done for it.  As Winston Smith was kind enough to point out, I can have it the way I want it in my local database.

Thank you everyone for responding to my inquiry, I most definitely appreciate it.        -kd5-

You can still contribute to the re-release cover site, as Addicted2DVD pointed out. Other users can also benefit from your scans.

You juat made the case for the original cover art without even realizing it or at least part of it.  You correctly statdedthat 99% have the newer cover. Let's remember that we are collectors, now which one has the most value (if any) the one that 99% have or the one that 1% have. Now in an ideal we should be able to caoture all cover variants, and hopefully someday we will.

You miss the point, pauls. Just as with stamps, rarity affects secondary market value. Ideally we would be able to capture all variants, I have said this repeatedly, but we can't and i hope that one day we will be able to do that. In this particular case, I think jewel cases were uused for some films back in the early days before the DVD market exploded, those that were released in jewels are probably quite rare and potentially quite valuable.
