| Posted: | | | | Good forenoon, Sirs,
I'm wondering what DVDs qualify for the genre "Special Interest".
Is "Special Interest" a genre of it's own, or an additional attribute?
Eg, is every comedy also "Special Interest", because it's intended only for the viewers having a special interest in a few laughs?
What sports movie is "Special Interest"? Does it depend on the type of sport?

I have concerts and live comedy programs filed under SI. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

I have concerts and live comedy programs filed under SI. This is the way I see it as well. Though for my local it is one I really don't actually use at all. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | It's subjective, but I would say valid examples of "Special Interest" are similar to this:
Instructional (i.e. How to cook Truffles) Trailer compilations (i.e. 42nd Street Forever volumes) DVD Magazine promos with various content (i.e. Total Movie & Entertainment) Titles about niche interests (i.e. The Intellectual World of Snails) | | | Corey |

| Posted: | | | | It's one of those non-genre genres I rarely use, but when I do use it it's mostly for tutorial or educational content, or for documentaries on VERY specific and narrow subjects. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I don't use this genre. In fact if I find it on one of my DVDs, I remove it even I don't add another genre. |

| Posted: | | | | I use it sparingly, ut I would never remove it, unless I felt it was blatntly incorrect, after al Special Interest is broad category and could encompass almost anythin. Fo ample, I have a Special Interest in Comed. That's a bit weird i knw, just an illustration | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | It bugs the crap out of me to see it listed as the genre for documentaries. I, personally, find that to be "blatently incorrect" since a documentary is a documentary. However, I have stopped contributing that change to the online, simply to avoid arguements. My personal feeling is that listing a documentary as "special interest" because it could be of special interest to someone makes the genre apply to absolutely EVERY dvd. Same with using it for concerts, which should be "music."
As far as locally, the only things I have listed as Special Interest, are what I call 'relaxation' DVDs (classical music + fish swimming, or classical music + images of nature), trailer compilations, Monsters Crash the Pajama Party Spook Show Spectacular. I used to list exercise dvds here, but I got rid of all of them. If I had a fireplace dvd, I'd put it here too.
Basically anything that does not fit in any other category. If it fits another catgeory, it isn't Special Interest in my opinion. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

Titles about niche interests (i.e. The Intellectual World of Snails) It finally got released?? Do you have a UPC? It doesn't seem to be in DVDProfiler yet. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I almost never bother to change online genres, but I have to disagree about documentaries. I agree most docs are of general interest, such as Planet Earth, but a documentary about pig breeding would fall under Special Interest to me at least. The appeal should at least be somewhat general imho. Also, things like fireplace and aquarium DVDs, I would put under Accessories rather than anything else. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | Most stores use special interest for things they don't have a category for. We have categories like sports, documentary, music and accessories so using special interest for those would be redundant. I use it for non-fiction that doesn't fall into these categories. (For instance, instructional videos.) |

I think a lot of series on PBS, The History Channel, etc. would be considered Special Interest. --------------- |
