I've been using dvdprofiler for over 10 years now and I don't think I've ever had the need to run a database repair.

But since 3.7/3.7.1, I seem to be doing them at about 1 a week.

I just added a watched event to 3 dvd's on my pc. I then did a sync on my iphone and got the following error :-

Error synchroninzing profile for I99118D93867843D2.4: *** - [NSConcreteMutableDatagetBytes:range:]: range {34058,4} exceeds data length 34060.

At the same time I got an error message on the pc. Sadly I didn't take a note of that one, but it suggested doing a database repair. So, I did and the sync is now goes without any error.

Seeing since the previous sync, all I'd done was add 3 watched events and that was within the the previous 5 mins, it didn't take it long to get into a mess.

Indeed, Ken stated somewhere in the beta release forum I believe that as of 3.7.x, DVDP will automatically suggest a database repair if it notices the previous shutdown or program exit wasn't completed as it should ... whatever that may mean.

At first, I always did a repair but now just ignore the message and everything seems to be running fine. I wonder if it's actually really necessary to have that check and message at startup?

I'll have to agree.  After I upgraded my desktop version from 3.7 to 3.7.1 (never used any betas), it would not start and a database repair was required, which deleted a whole bunch of stuff.  I ended up restoring from a backup done on my laptop and the database was clean (I ran a database repair just to see).

I think that the actual problem may lie with the fact that as of the latest version, the program is not shutting down completely a good percentage of the time, at least on my computer. Since I loaded the latest version, I've had to run Db repair at least every other time I've used the program. Most times I've had to use the Task Manager to shut it down.

Same here, although as a precaution I usually run a db repair before I upgrade to a new version. Helps to delete all the unused stuff that builds up over time as well.

Yupp,
same here, no problems at all.
I do use the repair tool every now and then (about every two weeks) to get rid of unused elements (Cast/Crew/Studios) but that's about it.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I run under Wine in Linux (i.e. an unusual user), but 3.7+ has been substancailly less stable than previous versions.

one of the issues may be that it seemed to me that the new version wasn't as extensively tested by a large number of users. Since it was marketed as a 'fix for IPOD' it may be that it was ignored by many since it was felt that it wasn't a major change for the rest.

I would agree with that Paul... as even though I downloaded and used the betas I found my interest in the beta was next to nothing because there was hardly anything there to be worthwhile for a user with no interest in the ipod areas of the program. Pretty much the only thing the standard desktop user got was the option for smaller features icons. And I believe we only got that because I imagine he had to make them for the ipod anyway.

I didn't start using beta until midway the its testing and complained about the number problems with the db and number of repair dbs required, which were summarily ignored. I created a second db and had problems restoring that db. I then stated that I was saving whole darn thing off on a external drive rather than trust db save.

With the current release I have had fewer problems, but I save the db every night, run a trash cleanup of my pc and run disc program which re-aligns all programs and their dependent files on the hard drive to program launch time and overall responsiveness.

I only use the pc version and those plug-ins, reports, etc. that come with it. My save db is over 22Gb and 15,000 profiles and I don't trust them until they have many months of use and most plug-ins take are to slow.

I've had lots of problems as well.  But only on my home PC where I sync with the iPhone app.  I also have the desktop version installed on my work laptop.  No syncing, no issues that have stood out (which doesn't mean they're not there).

I'm also leaving the desktop running at home.  All the time.  Used to be I'd fire it up, do my stuff and close it down.  I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

But I will say I think the iPhone app still has bugs that are making this problem worse.

Nothing but problems here. In all the time I've used Profiler, I never had to run a database repair. Now, I do every time it attempts to load up, but today Profiler locks up and I can't even do that. It's very frustrating.

Version 3.7 and higher automatically prompt to run a database repair if the program did not shut down normally in the prior run.  Earlier versions did not have this prompt.  An incomplete shutdown does not necessarily indicate a problem with the database - this is just a safety measure, as catching an issue early can prevent data loss.

For those who are experiencing a regular incomplete shutdown, first try running without plugins.  If the incomplete shutdown appears related to a specific plugin, please notify the developer via their site and us via a support ticket.

If the issue isn't related to a plugin, please open a support ticket and post the contents of your debuglog.txt file.  This file is in your Application Data directory, under DVD Profiler.  For instance on Windows 7, it may be at "C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\DVD Profiler". This will help us diagnose why the shutdown is incomplete.

Lou, you can run the repair utility directly from the Start menu.  If this doesn't resolve the issue, please open a ticket.
