At the risk of annoying a lot of people I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who are interested to say what we would like to see in other Profiler programs.

While I, obviously, can't ask people to stay away...I would like to politely request that if you have absolutely no interest in other types of Profiler please respect those of us that do and leave us to our dreaming.

I'm very aware that many users of DVDP don't want Ken's attention diverted away from DVDP and I respect that.

This thread is purely to fantasize about the possibility of other software from Invelos.

Ok...with the above in mind this is what I'd like to see:

BOOK PROFILER
Minimum fields:
Title
Author
Genre
ISBN
Description/Overview
Page Count
Dimensions (eg. 180 mm x 120 mm)
Purchase Place/Date/Price
Format
Condition
Series
Series #
Read Date
Reading History
Publisher
Publication Date
RRP
Dustjacket tickbox.

Music Profiler
Minimum Fields:
Title
Artist
Genre
ISBN
Media Type (eg. CD/MP3/MP4)
Tracklist
Description/Overview
Length
Purchase Place/Date/Price
Condition
Play Date
Play History
Label
Release Date
RRP
Ability to link to Playlist to play from Profiler.
Ability to download from either CDDB, Gracenote or (as with DVDP) have a user built DB.

Game Profiler
Minimum Fields:
Title
Designer
Genre
ISBN
Multiple ratings (for other players to be able to rate)
Length of Play.
Description/Overview
# of Players
Dimensions (eg. 180 mm x 120 mm)
Purchase Place/Date/Price
Format (eg. Board, Card, Dice, Tile etc)
Condition
Play Date
Play History
Release Company
Release Date
RRP
Expansions Available Tickbox
Ability to link to BoardGameGeek.com

For all of the above I would like the ability for the cover scans to display in a format fitting the collection, eg. A CD case or a Box (game) or even a 3D Spine for Books.

Unless I'm mistaken most of the above can be adapted from current Profiler fields quite easily.

I'd be interested to see what other people consider essential fields.

Regarding the "Music Profiler":
If it's really meant as "music" and not "CD" another minimum field would be "Media Type"
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

@Pantheon. Nice post. Good first start is defining the data model.

See here for one user's approach to mapping his data model onto the DVDP database technology. Very clever use of existing fields and the translation files for a Wine List!!! During that time I proposed a "skin" consisting of (1) field mapping, (2) translation file, (3) database template(s), (4) Layout, and (5) HTML Section(s).
(Edit: sorry I missed the fact that you were already well aware of that.  )

If there were some sort of system and rules, one could envision one or more plugins that would facilitate loading a "skin" and importing data. Of course the biggest issue would be the lack of an online database process. Don't know how to solve that one ...
Thanks for your support.

One problem would be quite easy to solve: Ken would have to open the adress fields for the online database(s) to direct them to custom online-databases. It would be great if you could select the database you wish to connect to for every collection tab seperately. This would enable several collections (DVD/Blu-Ray, Music, Books, Wine, Whisky, ...) all in one window

The other problem, that arises if Ken decides to do so is: We would need users that spend time and money to operate this database. I'm not sure if anyone would do this and not get anything back in return.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

Some interesting food for thought. Most of us are already doing that: contributions, HTML sections, layouts, XML tools and plugins and even web sites, all gratis with a couple of exceptions. (Edit: I see your response ... seems like a good last word on that issue unless somebody else wants to chime in ...)

Yupp,
but maintaining a database included covering the evaluation process for new/changed contributions can easily become a full time job. Not to mention the costs that may arise for the traffic

I actually saw that at the time and it inspired me to attempt to use the Translation file to adapt DVDP for CDs. (which you can see on page 2 of that thread)
It worked to an extent...but I really didn't like it.
Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who likes everything to have a place to go and for things to display correctly.

With that in mind...if a skin/html window could be written that would translate DVDP fields and display them as listed above I'd possibly go for that. Even more so if the skin/html could also display the cover in an appropriate graphic (eg. a CD case for a CD or MP3 etc).

As for the online db aspect....if it meant having these programs in some format I'd happily go without the online aspect.
The program I currently use only downloads from Amazon...and then I add all my personal stuff.
I also can't export!!!

So, if Ken actually did something like this I'd have to re-input all my data!...and, I'd be happy to do it for an invelos product!

Profiling games prior to the PS1 would be a nightmare to find accurate release date information and regional variations which all have the same UPC.

For example Nintendo games from 8 bit and 16 bit era where packaged in cardboard. And it was seen at the time as extra packaging.

So got thrown in the bin.

Meaning the majority of the games you find are just carts and have no UPC.

I'd be interested in a Game Profiler and a Comic Profiler (especially if it can auto-scan digital comics to add to the library, like we now let DVDP scan a DVD and add it using disc ID).

The alternatives I use now:
- Games: Collectorz Game Collector (which is actually pretty good) and Playfire.com free online collection
- Digital Comics: ComicRack (awesome free software that is not only a reader but also a catalog manager)

However, I must add to this that I only would like to see them if it's not to the detriment of DVDP and it's portable variants (DVDP Mobile & DVDP app). If Ken is alone to program all this and the inclusion of more types of software would triple or quadruple the waiting time for DVDP updates, then I would prefer he just sticks to DVDP (or hires extra programmers).

Have to admit I wasn't thinking of console games when I suggested a GameProfiler.

I was thinking of board games.

But, hopefully, it could work for both!

I didn't even know that people (other than myself) still played board games!

Then again, because I almost never have anyone else that wants to play, I end up just designing them on the computer and playing against  a weak AI
