| Posted: | | | | I got a question. What should we enter as role names for interviewees in documentaries?
Explanation: I've been doing profiles on some of these as of late, and sometimes there are interviewees in documentaries with their name in on-screen subtitles such as "Dominic Lieven" and then one line below their capacity, e.g. "Biographer of Nicholas II".
What to enter as name is clear (Dominic Lieven, in this example). However, what to enter as role name, considering that these are interviewees during a documentary? I can see two possibilities: 1) Enter what's displayed on-screen, in this case "Biographer of Nicholas II"; 2) Enter Himself, and use Credited As (much like we do with honorifics) to read "Dominic Lieven, Biographer of Nicholas II" in this case.
So far, I've been doing it according to option 1) without giving it too much thought. However since it's not a role they are playing (in the way actors do) and could be regarded in the same way as honorifics, I started to doubt and consider option 2) as well.
What do you all think? |

| Posted: | | | | I can understand your doubt. I would stick to option 1. The Contribution Rules give not much info about documentaries so I would just enter the on screen credits like you would do with a feature film. | | | Cor |

| Posted: | | | | What is on screen during the commentary is not a credit, it is an informative subtitle, as sometimes in movies, we have information about where the action takes place. For me the only way to enter this information is :
Dominic Lieven : Himself (uncredited)
If he is in the credits at the end of documentary, just type the information as on screen in those credits, not during the documentary. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

No role, because they have no role. |

| Posted: | | | | I would say if they are not in the end credits this rule would come in to effect... Rules Quote: Quote: If a film has no end credits, but does have actors credited elsewhere, enter the actors from those credits. And even if they are in the end credits... there is this rule... which would allow us to use the roles from the documentary itself. Rules Quote: Quote: If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use the film itself, or another source to identify the role. However, mass copy from a third party commercial database which violates their stated usage license is not allowed. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited. Would allow us to us stuff like "Biographer of Nicholas II"... taking it from the film itself as the rule states. The only way I would use something like... Name as Himself is if the actual end credits had it that way. | | | Pete |

is if the actual end credits had it that way. I also use it when there's no way to identify a role or capacity (no on-screen title or capacity, no verbal introduction in the film etc.), since that at least makes clear they are not playing a role, but are being interviewed as themselves. I consider this to be within the "you may use the film itself, or another source to identify the role" rule. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

| Posted: | | | | I of course agree with that as well... but something like this documentary where they have that I feel it is well within the rules to use it. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I can understand that and see nothing wrong with it. But personally just the plain fact that it is a documentary my mind would automatically go to him actually being the biographer. Of course I am fine either way. | | | Pete |
