I was just wondering, how many of you are going to buy the theatrical version. It seems like a business move to first release the theatrical version and then at some point the extended one. I was wonder what you guys (or girls) are thinking about that?

Waiting for EE, but also waiting to see some reviews of it. First reviews I saw for the theater cuts makes it easy not to care or want them.

I may buy the extended versions. I do have the DVDs, and although I enjoy the films, I'm not sure if I will actually watch them. So probably if I can get them really cheap at some point.

I would have been fine with my extended editions on DVD.  They're not really favorite movies of mine anyway.  The wife and kids love them.  But after watching the DVDs recently, I realized just how bad they look.  So I'll pick them up.  But only when we're next in the mood to see them again (and after they're available obviously).

That makes it even more "Evil" to release the theatrical version...Even though the package really looks nice. I saw them at a local store, which had them on display by the 26th of March even though they won't be released officially til April 6th in Germany/Austria .. The price for the 3 pack was 59,99€ (exactly $80)..

As for me, the one who opened this thread, I own the Extended Versions in the pretty expensive packages with bookends or figures or whatever and will most likely not buy the theatrical version.. Maybe if they are on sale for like $30.. Still there are a bunch of movies that came out on Blu in the wrong version (e.g. "Live free or Die Hard").. And in the case of my example the correct Version still hasn't been released.. Even though the normal one has been on the market for about 3 years... I know that that's not the same.. Warner is especially "evil" when it comes to double tiping.. Like "Natural Born Killers" and then they released the Dir. Cut only a few months later.. Or to a lesser extent they released "Grumpy Old Men" on BD and then released a combo of part 1 & 2 which gives the owner of the first release no chance to purchase only Part 2, and one has to pay for Part 1 again..

I quite enjoyed the films and watch them once a year...usually around Christmas time.  I am biased, though, because I love, just about, anything Sci-Fi/Fantasy.  While I did double dip with the DVDs, I will not be double dipping the Blu-rays.  I will wait for the extended editions.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I'll probably buy them at some point since I no longer own the theatrical cuts on DVD. Sure, the extended cuts are nice but it was the originals I watched in excitement in the theater after waiting all those years. And afaik they are still Peter Jackson's preferred "director's cuts".

I have the fancy extended editions too, with the bookends and statues (and they've been on top of my entertainment center since their release) and I've watched them at least once a year since they came out.  AFAIC, there's no reason to watch the theatrical release - I could just be watching the extended edition.  Hence, waiting.

Everything recent I can find points to a 2011 release for the extended versions at the earliest.  Perhaps skip can share his source?

Even if it takes to 2020, I'll wait for the extended versions.  No quadruple dipping for me.
