Should the Final Cut releases be treated as box sets, a feature with bonus films or a regular profile? Are sets like Legend, Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition and I Am Legend: Ultimate Edition any different. Please discuss.

My take: whether box sets or bonus films, children must be different movies. Different cuts of the same movie don't qualify.

Imho a different cut doesn't make a movie.

But there are many profiles in which there's a child for one of the (bonus film) or that took both cuts as childs (box set). So this is what is made.
As we're allowed on on BR/DVD-Combos to put in a child of the DVD, (with the absolute same movie, not even a different cut), I think makin' childs of the the different cut is also accepted.

I agree; though one trouble is how we then show the features like commentaries; if there are more than one on different versions how do we describe the audio streams? Or do we not and just leave it as an exercise to find out?

Normally I would agree, but on the other hand you have releases like "Payback: Special Edition" where Theatrical and Director's Cut are way off and make a different movie

The Blade Runner collection is not being treated as a box set.  All relevant information is, IIRC, in the main profile and not distributed among the optional child profiles.

The child profiles are optional for those who desire them. And as noted it's the same concept as creating child profiles for BD/DVD or HD/DVD combos.

Ace, the child profiles exist and the box set contents are in the parent profile as you know. If you succeed in removing the box set information from the parent, the child profiles will still be there. You'll just be making it more difficult to download the child profiles for those that want them. Of what benefit is that?

Agree with this.  The other thing that is different from this and releases that have two versions is in most cases the two versions are on the same disc.  In this case they are on different discs and have different specifications for the different versions along with different credits (I believe).

IN many ways this is more in line with the DB/DVD combos.

I totally agree. It should be left alone. The contributions of the child profiles as "bonus discs" were accepted by invelos so why do you want to remove the connection to the main profile?

I am aware of that. I am saying that by the rules, those child profiles shouldn't be there. If we change the rule, we would have to add child profiles for lots of other sets, too.

No one has to do anything.  They are optional and don't detract from the main profile.

If the child profiles aren't worthy of linkage then you should start your crusade by getting them (the children) removed from the database and then remove the links in the main profile.

We as users cannot change the rules nor can we remove child profiles. All you can do by removing the box set contents is win the academic argument and break the links to the child profiles. I don't see that it serves any beneficial purpose to do so.

Didn't we just have this same exact discussion?  Many people, and it is fine by me, have been treating these like TV Series sets.  Full parent profile, with child profiles for those that want them.  As these sets aren't really addressed in the rules, I have no problem with it.  I don't see why anybody would...everybody gets what they want and should be happy with that.
