This software includes a method (link) for connecting to the IMDB site yet everybody on here seems to frown on any useage of information from that site.

The double standards applied by those members that continually suggest that you visit IMDB, BUT then frown on those of us that use that information has finally made me realise that they DO NOT want me to create my own Database BUT DO want me to conform to their idea of what information I should have in my OWN Database.

It is for that reason that I am giving up on DVD Profiler and am moving to another user friendly and open minded Database software.

This is a shame since I really like this software , it's just that I am pig headed enough to think that I should be allowed to use whatever information I want from whatever source I want and not be restricted by the "Big Brother" attitudes of those that see this software as having to be "rigid" and NOT "open" in structure.

Hey there,

well first it is a legal issue, the database of imdb is theirs
Also you are free to use the imdb data if you keep it local, no problem with that,
but if you contribute to the online database you have to follow the rules.

If we would not have rules, the online database would become useless in a few days.

Hope you do understand,

Donnie

Fully understand what you are saying - however if there are "legal issues" why include it as a possible tool?

Better to ensure that there can be NO legality issues than to place members in a position where they can possibly break copyright laws (ie Stop people from directly linking to IMDB from DVD Profiler).

This is because IMDb owns that data and DVD Profiler cannot use it without paying a licensing fee. If you've seen other programs use IMDb data they are either 1) Paying the licensing fee, or 2) Using it illegally.

While I definitely agree there's a bit of unreasonable hatred of all things IMDb going on here, I don't see the double-standard you're talking about. I am one of those who happily suggest you visit IMDb and use it for anything you want, as long as you don't try to contribute the data, for the above stated reason.

By all means, feel free to copy as much data from IMDb as you want as long as you keep it local. For example, many users are using DJ Doena's Cast/Crew Edit program to copy cast and crew from IMDb for use in their local database only. As long as it only stays on your computer and isn't uploaded to the online, no one here has a problem with it, and it's not illegal.

Personally I am on a quest to get as many birth years as I can find into my cast database, and IMDb is valuable for that.

As I've already noted. You are free to use whatever information you want from whatever source you want. Just don't contribute it.

A link is an entirely different beast than copying their data and use it in the Online database (which makes Invelos liable).

It's like linking to a news story or youtube video or whatever versus copying it to one's own website.

There's a difference between data mining from IMDb and using IMDb to verify data.

If you contribute some new information, say a production year, it is entirely legit to include in your contribution notes links to IMDb as one of your sources among several. Just to fully document that the data is indeed correct.

Whenever the data I am contributing is also found on IMDb, I include a link to it along with whatever other links I've got: Wikipedia, actor's websites, studio websites, etc.

Personally I don't see how creating another IMDb clone accomplishes anything than data redundancy. But I understand that this software is not for everyone, which is fine, you're free to use it, or not.

I have a hard time believing that anybody has told you that you can't have IMDb information in your local database.  Even ouor most vocal hater of IMDb has done that.  What you can't do, and this is because of IMDb's ToS, is upload that data to the main database.

You have made a total of 5 posts since you registered.  2 in this thread, 1 about report fields and 2 about exporting to the iPod Touch.  Unless you have been exchanging a lot of PMs with people, when exactly did you encounter this "Big Brother" attitude?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I'm guessing submissions. Plus, you can learn a lot from lurking.

No matter how hard you try it will never happen not while one person here keeps this place under his thumb and the governing authority refuses to bring him in to line or boot him for good.

You can always join the next Spot site which should be up by the end of this year fingers crossed.

Really? You had to go there? I know you derail threads as a kind of protest, but this is pretty sad. The "one person" you're talking about has absolutely nothing to do with us not being able to contribute IMDb data to the online Db.

Unless of course you're talking about Ken.

While of course it's not his job to decide if it's allowed that one person makes it his life mission to make sure it never see the light of day on profile.
