this may have been answered i searched through forums but couldnt find an answer. For dvd production years in the profile do we use the year the movie/television show came out or the year the dvd came out. i have seen it both ways in the profiler. an example beavis and butthead butt-o-ween/do christmas was out on tv the years 1996-1999 the dvd came out in 2002. contribution says 2002 for production year. another example rudolph the red nosed reindeer came out in 1964 dvd came out in 2004 the profile says production year 1964. just curious which is correct. thanks

You should use the year of original theatrical release (for film) original airing for tv series/programs.

It seems very clear to me... just had to look at the rules.

For movies the rules say...

Quote:
Enter the year of the original theatrical release. For films that have been updated (e.g., a Special Edition or Directors Cut) use the year of the original release, not the year that the re-release was “made” or released.

For TV Series...
Quote:
Complete Series/Season - Use the year that the Series/Season was produced and first aired in its country of origin. TV series are typically spread over a date range for a season, for example 2002-2003, for DVD Profiler purposes this will be entered as the beginning of the season; from the example the entry would be 2002.

Anthologies of Episodes – The Production Year will be the date of the Earliest Episode

It's indeed curious. You would think the Production Year would technically be the year in which the film was actually produced, and the Theatrical Year would be the year in which it was first shown in the theater.

Personnally I would too prefer to use the Copyright (ed) Production Year since there is then no reason for two people to argue over which is correct. It's not as though it's not printed at the end of every credit roll.

In fact, as rules ask us to enter Theatrical Year, that is the title I gave to that field (as anyone can do using translation files).

I would not like to lose the year of release since this is widely used elsewhere, just wish it was called something else like... Year of release perhaps?

If you want Year of release,  use it. Easy with a translation file.

wouldn't the release date field capture the year of release?

No, since the Release Date field in DVDP reflects the release of the DVD, not the film's release year.
