My extended family comes over for "Movie Night" every week and it's an interesting challenge to find films that everyone a) hasn't seen (recently), and b) would enjoy.  We do our best!  Last night, in the October spirit, we showed "Drag Me to Hell" and the reactions ran the entire gamut.  I personally loved it  , and on the other end I had one attendee exclaim that it was "the worst movie I've ever seen."

Anyone else run into an especially polarizing movie?

The new Star Trek movie, the fandom is strongly divided on that and those who don't like it claim that "the others" aren't really fans at all.

I absolutely HATED this film. I felt that Abrams found subplots in the scripts from TOS and tossed them in a hat, then picked them out one at a time and pieced together the story. Plus, the added "comedic" quality of Kirk was pathetic.

Except for the usual suspects that polarize because they are wanted to do so (political / satirical movies), I had this recently with "Juno" and "Little Miss Sunshine", two movies I love, but others seem to find absolutely boring.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

The Blair Witch Project is one I can think of. My best friend loves it, I absolutely hate it. He finds it scary as hell, I view it more as a poor comedy.

I caught it in the theater when it originally came out. I had just come back from a two-month extended vacation in the Nevada desert, and I took my mother out to see it. Yeah I know, sounds like a bad choice now...and it was. She's normally scared by something like Scooby Doo. Even she wasn't scared by The Blair Witch Project and also hated it. I just kept thinking, "Gee, Cannibal Holocaust a little?" while watching it.

One that springs to mind for me is Lost in Space. I really liked it but just about everyone else I know hated it.

From what I am hearing from friends "Where The Wild Things Are" is gonna be one of those films. I haven't seen it yet but a few of my friends went last night and about half loved it and the others hated it. I don't care I am dying to see it.

"Napoleon Dynamite" is a big divider amongst my family and friends. I love it but most people I know hate it. I read that the Netflix Prize competitors had the same problem with Napoleon messing up their attempts to update the Netflix recommendation engine as it was one of the most polarizing films they carry.

Anyone ever watch any film by Michael Moore? (Or did I just turn this into a political thread? If so, ignore this question, please.)
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

My mom and I hated Dogma, but all of our friends love the film.  Same with Army of Darkness and Big Trouble in Little China.  Absolutely can't stand them but everyone I know loves them.

My favorite film is Grave of the Fireflies, which one of my best friends flat refuses to watch because she only likes 'entertaining' movies.

... as for Star Trek, I haven't made up my mind whether or not to watch it.  I love TOS and its characters the way they are, so I don't know what I'll make of this new movie.

I've seen Bowling for Columbine (twice) & Sicko.  Loved them.  I have Roger & Me but haven't watched it yet.  I know that Fahrenheit 9/11 is just going to piss me off, so I'm not sure I'll ever watch it.

I loved it.

I also love Defending Your Life. I've tried to play it for others and even loaned it out hoping to spark some interest. Everyone else so far has hated it.

South Park the movie. My friends who are casual movie watchers, who also watch and love the show at the time the movie came out hated the movie. In fact most people who I have talked to either love it or hate it. Personally I think it is brilliant satire. People I have talked to think it is crap because of the musical aspect of the movie. I tell them they just don't get it.
