Here in Norway I see sometimes that contributed titles are provided by users that seems to me that the most important thing for them are to be credited for their contribution. Latest example are Lakeview Terrace that I bought last week, but haven't had time to profile it yet. Today, after returning from a two day trip to Norways capitol (concert with Green Day) Lakeview Terrace showed up as a new entry. After it was downloaded, the ONLY info that was provided: Production Year&Country, Rating, Case Type,Regions and videoformat. Contribution notes on that title: Source, Blu-ray cover.

Why can't people provide more torough info? enter cast from credits, crew, studios, soundformat etc etc. I know it's "legal" to contribute new titles with lack of almost all information just to get it in the base and let others do all the work after, but in most cases I suspect that the users just want the credit. When I buy a title that's not in the base, I never contribute it untill I get all the info entered on that title, then I can say tomyself, I provided in my opinion a 100% contribution for all the other users that will buy that particular title. Of course I can miss something out, misspell rolenames etc, but that's easy to correct after for other users.. Well this was my little frustration

I completely agree with you on that. I don't mind partial contributions but when it's only 1 or 2 fields being filled in at a time on an empty profile I really don't like that. I've even seen one or two users who fill in only a couple of people at a time on crew sections & as soon as that's been accepted add another couple.

Of course, Ken's said it's fine & it's just an ego thing so I tend to ignore it most of the time.

Those are some of the areas that take more time to profile and have a higher documentation threshhold. It could be that they're willing to contribute basic, quicky, easy information and have nothing to do with ego. I tend to prefer cast, crew and studios and I'm grateful that someone else has done the other parts that I consider boring and tedious (Overviews come to mind )

Actually, I prefer if the initial contribution contains as little as possible as it will be accepted immediately without voting. Meaning any garbage can easily get in and then it takes time to get it removed or corrected. Unless of course the first contributor has done his/her homework and submitted good data.

Yes sorry, if it's for a new profile then I prefer fewer fields for the reasons you give. However once it's in the database, updating one field at a time is just annoying for voters & screeners (IMHO).

One reason to do everything except cast & crew is that you can generally do most everything else without a drive.  If I were to contribute to a blu-ray, I would never do cast/crew because I have no blu-ray drive and therefore can't verify the information.  Everything else could be taken from the package.

One might also do the rest of the info and submit without cast & crew for time.  It takes much more time to do cast/crew than to do the rest of the fields and someone might not have that much time to spare but can get the rest done and hope another contributor will get the rest later.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Diamond Edition, UPC 786936787603 isn't week from release
and already has 7 updates.  Covers 2, which is good. And odds are that that isn't the end of it.

As Danae Cassandra states I can see reason for 3 and maybe 4 and updates per new Profiler updates.

TV series with several children obviously more.

Speaking for myself, I enter as much as possible except cast and crew. I get my cast and crew from IMDB, so I keep that local and don't submit it.

I know others do the same, so that could be a reason there.

Until May of this year, I was used to contribute complete profiles that were not in the database. For that, I had to build a "per the rules" profile, contribute, then I modified the profile to have correct data.

Then Ken wrote that he had many very good contributors and there were no problems with contributions. So, to avoid to make twice the job, I stopped contributing and made directly correct profiles. A  few days ago, I noticed that none of the profiles I had not contributed had been put in the database (Where are the other very good contributors Ken promised ?  ). I knew that on those nine profiles, I had some data that were not correct "per the rules", but I didn't remind exactly where. That would have been a huge work to verify everything, so I deleted all cast and crew, overview, studios, and contributed just partial profiles.

I have really nothing to do with the credits of contribution. But it is really a pain to contribute AND have correct data.

At the moment i am going through my collection and adding everything i have that is not in the database, have done about 25 profiles and probably have about double that to go, i am just doing basic profiles to get them in the system i will eventually get around to adding cast/crew and other info but also hoping that now they are there someone else will do some of them as well

As others have said, I also get my cast & crew from IMDb and thus must not (and will not) contribute it. I don't care about studios and MCs at all, so I don't bother to find out which is what.

So, when I buy a new TV show I usually do the following:

I add the season box by UPC.
Then I add the season discs by DiscId but without downloading the profile from Invelos, as it's often another version of the season box or from a different release.
While adding I check the runtimes with DVD Decrypter.
Then I copy the general data like genres, audio formats, subtitles, regions, ... from parent to children.
Then I import cast & crew from IMDb.
Then I put a full lock on the child profile and partial locks on the parent profile (usually title, studios, genres, discs, cast, crew, srp, produces, release date, running time)
Then I backup these profiles, open my contribution database and restore these profiles.
Then I check if these child profiles are already in.
If yes, I contribute and check whether the runtime is correct and contribute just that if necessary.
If no, I adjust the profiles for contributing, which means changing titles from my standardized pattern (<Title>: Season X: Disc Y) to what's on the cover. I delete cast & crew completely and then I contribute this basic disc profile and also contribute the parent profile with the box set information.

But that's it. No overviews, no studios, no cast & crew. Because that's either data I'm not interested in or my idea of good data is different from the contribution rules. I can accept the fact that the rules are the way they are but I also don't see the point in doing work that is useless for me personally.

I'd say that first of all, if it's a pre-release profile that's being contributed, I'd like it to contain just some very basic information.

Secondly, if it's a new entry in the database, I personally submit everything at once, but I do understand Kinoniki's and Forget's line of reasoning.

Third: no one is required to do more than they feel like, as Ken made very clear already. However, I would much prefer it if people would at least contribute complete data fields. So e.g. not a partial cast or crew list, but either a complete list matching the film credits or nothing at all. Then at least it is easier to spot what still needs to be done.
If people submit a couple of names at a time, that's a nuisance. And if they do it just to get their contribution numbers up, it is just pathetic.

Just my 2 cents.

P.S.
Shouldn't this thread be in the Contributions forum?

Personally, I tend to contribute the bare minimum initally so that the title is at least in the database (and NOT to get my name on it!) and then add the other data when I can. I do this as it when I am adding the title to my owned list and I generally do not have the time at that point to do a full break down

I mostly try to contribute everrything when I submit a new profile, but I think there is nothing wrong with contributing partial data, if the user do not have that much time on his hands.

I honestly think we do not have much users that do it for the ego, it is fun to help the community

Personally I am happy with any accurate, per rules update anyone makes... no matter the size. I know I personally will do large updates when I can/feel up to it. But I also will make small updates as I see them when I have little time available or just don't feel up to getting into something more major. For me personally it has nothing to do with any numbers or having my name on any profile.

I can relate to this reasoning.
