I'm profiling a DVD with 5.1 surround, but nowhere on the disc or the packaging does it state what kind of surround it is. So no Dolby, DTS or anything like that. The back simply states:

Language: English; 5.1 surround sound

I've confirmed that it is indeed in 5.1, so that's not an issue. But what do I pick in the drop-down menu? MPEG-2 Surround perhaps?

Input would be appreciated.

I would set it to Dolby Digital 5.1 because that's what it most likely is.

Agreed
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

How did you confirm it was 5.1?  Almost all ways I know of confirming that have some way to confirm what type it is.

I played it in my player and noticed surround activity in all 5 speakers and the sub.

Well, I would either hit "Display" on my DVD-Player remote until it shows me what audio he plays, or look at my AV-Receiver or put the DVD into my computer and have a look at it with e.g. DVD Fab

If you use PowerDVD or DVD Audio Extractor to check the disc, it should tell you specifically if the audio is encoded as Dolby, DTS, PCM, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions on software to check the sound format. I'll do that.

The DVD standard requires that a disc either have Dolby Digital or PCM uncompressed sound.  It can have others, such as DTS, but it has to have at least one of Dolby Digital or PCM.  DTS put their proposal in to the governing DVD board too late to have themselves considered a required format.  So if there's only one track on a DVD, it has to be DD or PCM (probably DD since PCM is very space-consuming).

But listening to the speakers is not a good way to determine the presence of 5.1, especially if you have Dolby Surround on your sound system, which can mimic it pretty well.

I own some DVD's that only have a single MPEG-2 audio track.

I don't own any but I remember seeing some DVDs several years back that only had a DTS track. The Studios released two versions of the films, one with a normal DD track & a separate one with DTS.

Possibly dumb question ... but is LPCM the same as PCM?

It means (Linear) Pulse Code Modulation. More here.

Thank you!  I now have a couple of "Other" audio formats to change to "PCM" for profiles that I recently added to the database (I was looking for the L ...)
