Don't want to spend $2k, but in the neighborhood of $1k to $1500 is alright.

I purchased a HP DV5t notebook last year and would recommend it to others Basic specs of what I bought which might also suit you: Centrino2 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 NVidia 9600GT Graphics Card with 512MB of dedicated memory BluRay Rom Digital TV Tuner 320GB HDD 15.4" Widescreen 4GB Ram It comes with HDMI out and two remotes and makes a decent Media Center PC. Probably either Dell ot HP no real preference. HP HDX 18t 18,4" Full HD display (1920 x 1080) optical blu-ray (not a burner). Specs are somewhat average, price here is 1300€ so there its probably also 1300$ or cheaper. But all there is are a few scratches on the lid. It has gone through some travels with me the only severe fault is the failure of a fan (last week) But since it's almost 5 years old now that is OK for me (repair gave me a hard time though, I had to disassemble the whole machine). | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

I bought a 17.5 wide screen, thinking wow, I'll love this big screen and it is often cumbersome on the lap. You have to be careful with air flow, which my Fujitsu has intakes on the bottom, making it NOT really a laptop. It does everything I want it to quite well, but if I had to do it over again (read: my next laptop) I'll go with a smaller model. | | | | Kevin |

In my experience theres not a lot of software that can properly use quad core processors, so most programs are stuck with a 1,6 GHz single core processor. Id personally rather get a 3 GHz dual core processor. But I'm no expert on processors, and have no experience how well Windows 7 handles quad core processors.
