Okay, so I picked up a new DVD last night - of the film Gadjo Dilo.  Entering it into my catalog, I find the only profile for it is a South Korean locality one.  The profile is incomplete, but its a good place to start.

The scanned back of the South Korea profile is different, and lists the disc as Region 3, while the one I bought is Region 0, so I know they're likely not the same, even if they do share the same UPC.

I have corrected the profile to match the disc I now own, added everything that was missing, but I have one question.

My question for my Profiler colleagues is this: which locality should I change mine to?

Options:
1.  United States:
Reasons For:  I live in the US & bought the DVD in the US.
Reasons Not:  It definitely appears to be an import.

2.  Turkey:
Reasons For:  The back of the case says "Turkish Edition"
Reasons Not: Subtitles are in English & Chinese, neither of which is an official language in Turkey.

3.  Other:
Please elaborate.

Thanks for any assistance!

Well, my personal view, judging solely by the facts that the package says BOTH that it is Turkish edition AND it has only subtitles in English and Chinese(!), is that it might not be a legitimate release. Depends, of course, on where you bought it, but that combination sounds very fishy to me.

I was thinking something similar. That and it also shares the same EAN as the South Korean entry already in the database.

Amazon.com has this title for sale, on their site, and they say it is an import, so option 1 is not correct.

I don't know what the standard is for Turkish DVDs, so I do not have an opinion of option 2.

I don't have this DVD, so don't have a better option for 3.

As for where I bought it - I got it off the shelf at a local shop in Louisville, Ear X-Tacy (http://www.earx-tacy.com).

I suppose another option would be China or Hong Kong?  The overview is in English and in Chinese characters (however, I do not know that it is Chinese, since I cannot actually read the language).

It could be Malaysian as well.  Their films tend to be Region 0 and carry Chinese & English subs (with Bahasa as a 3rd on many, but not all).

Don't know if it will prove anything but try putting the EAN in here and see what the issuing country is (for the EAN)

Pardon the ignorance, but what is an EAN?  Is that the same as the UPC?

Effectively - European Article Number. Despite its name though, it's used pretty much worldwide, unlike the Universal Product Code which I think only really USA & Canada use.

Okay, so the EAN is the thing I always thought was the UPC.  Or they are the same.

Entering that number gives me HK as the issuing country, which I assume is Hong Kong.

My memory this morning was a bit faulty - it says "Turkish Version" not Edition.  And the website listed for the distributor has an .hk at the end of it, so I think I'm going to end up going with Hong Kong as the locality.  Website is in tiny, tiny print so I'm not surprised I missed it last night.

Thanks everybody!

Cass:

They are similar, but not exactly rhe same. The Universal Product Code is used extensively in the US and canada at least. While the EAN is used in many places outside of US, the similaroity is that they are both barcodes and can be read by a laser scanner. Beyond that the loacality should be the country in which it was intended to be sold. (Turkey). Similarly I were to go to Cananda and purchase a DVD and bring it back to the States, the locality remains Canada, the only question would be Canada or Canada (Quebec).

At this point I'm not sure that the locality it was meant to be sold in is actually Turkey.

This morning, when I made the post, I thought that it said Turkish Edition, whereas what it really says is Turkish Version - right above where it says that it has optional English or Chinese subtitles.  Blame my misread on being half-awake and wanting to get the post up before heading to work.

So, at this point I think the correct answer is Hong Kong.  Here's why:
- The EAN site says Hong Kong
- One option for subtitles is Chinese
- The overview is in English & Chinese characters (likely Chinese language, but I don't read Chinese, so I can't say definitively and Chinese is not the only language to use that logogram)
- The tiny, tiny print of the distributors website on the package ends in .hk

You could take a look at the rating system that's being used on the DVD cover. Usually that's a good indicator for the Locality. If it is indeed a Hong Kong release (and it sure does sound like it), there ought to be a Hong Kong rating on the cover (unless it's an unrated release, of course).

Some excellent suggestions above. If you can check the framerate, that'd help determine if it's HK or Turkish, the former being NTSC, the latter PAL.

As it stands, it's looking very much like a Hong Kong release. The dual-language thing is standard (if not compulsory) for that country.

Are you sure that Hong Kong is NTSC? I always thought that since it was a UK area until not that long ago that it was PAL and Wikipedia agrees.
