A couple of my contributions have been declined due to (I guess) the message below.

"An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes. Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules."

Does anyone have a clue what it means. All the info and images were lifted straight off the cover - manually. Whatever does 'third party data base' refer to?

Hard to say without an example. But if the cast/crew, for example, were taken from imdb that would be a "third party database".
If all data is taken manually from disc and/or cover and that is specifically noted in your contribution notes you won't get this type of rejection notice.

Maybe if you provide a UPC we can help you a bit more.

Cheers, Steve

Unfortunately the decline messages aren't very detailed as there are so few of them available to the Screeners.

Can you post your exact contribution notes as you may've missed something from them.

"post my exact contribution notes"  do you mean what I write in the little box when posting?  If so, I simply wrote "info from cover" in both cases.

Sorry, I meant the number that the DVD has under the barcode. If you provide that we can see what your notes were and give a better explanation as to why your contribution was rejected.

Ah, read your reaction to friend Forget_the_Rest. Info from cover is often not enough. For example you can't get the price/crew/cast/country of origin from the cover. If you contributed something that actually isn't on the cover your contribution is likely to get declined (invalid or missing source)

Could you give an example of the information you contributed?

Ah I see. That might not be enough depending on what you were trying to contribute. Only certain info can come from the cover. Title, Rating, Rating Description, Media Company, Overview, Aspect Ratio*, Run Time*, Region Code* are those that spring to mind.

Edit: Which fields were you entering. I notice that the EAN/UPC you've given is for a new title not yet in the database so we can't check the existing data.

* Although Aspect Ratio, Run Time & Region Code can come from the cover they aren't always accurate so the definitive source is the DVD/Blu-ray itself.

OK, so if it's not on the cover... where exactly on the DVD 'itself' is it? I'm gonna jump!  I'm gonna jump!

To prevent duplicate posting I'll let Forget take it from here. He types faster!

Run Time is fairly obvious, I think just about every DVD player & DVD playing software allows you to see the running time of a title. Region Code can be checked with various software. Aspect Ratio is the most difficult as there's no definitive way to give the ratio. Of course if the stated ratio says 2.35:1 but you have no black bars at the top/bottom you'll know it's wrong.

Note: I'm not saying you can't use the cover for those fields but it should only be for a preliminary contribution.

Don't worry about duplicate posting. The more responses the more likely that everything gets covered.

OK, I follow your drift but it still doesn't explain 'third party data base' and I have no idea what's actually wrong with the posting to correct it.  Should I write 'information carefully copied from the cover of the DVD' instead?

Per Rules the Cast and Crew must come from the beginning and end credits of the actual film/show. That sounds like the reason it got declined.

You would need to actually play the disc and watch the opening/ending credits. Not take the cast and/or crew from the case.

That all depends on the information you're trying to contribute. For instance these are (partially) the notes from the last contribution that I did that's just got approved. Note that in this contribution there is nothing that I changed that needed any other source than the cover.

- Added rating details from cover
- Moved MC to its own field (from cover)
- Overview, corrected to match the cover: - Impossible... zoals => Impossible...zoals - adembenemende spanning en opwindende => adembenemende en opwindende -alle beloften waar! => alle beloften waar! Mission Impossible III? M:I the best! - Metro Added asterisk and the extra information.

But if you for example want to enter the studios you'll have to insert the DVD and actually see what's in the opening and end credits.

If all you stated in your notes was "from cover" and you didn't contribute cast/crew then you can disregard the third-party notice. There are certain standard reasons the screeners can use and they don't always exactly fit the situation.

What you can do if you like, if you're just starting out with contributing , is not try and do the whole DVD at once. If you concentrate on certain area's first it isn't so overwhelming. And you might want to browse the Rules-section (Database-Tools-Contribution Rules in the menu above) if you haven't done so already that is. There are lots of people who'll help you out with any questions you have, a new contributor is always welcome!
