I've been experiencing profiles that the online version has been updated (I can see the newer information on other pending contributions) yet the profile won't download the new information for me. It's not locks because I don't have any of the fields locked, and even if I did the should still show up in the list of updated profiles.

Did you try performing a manual refresh of the profile and see if there was any differences in your local profile afterwards?

I did try the manual refresh.

At the point it wasn't updating I did the Refresh Online Profile List and it did download an updated list. I then retried the update and nothing. I even did Preview Changes and it showed no changes. The profile did eventually update when the next update was released.

I got the same Problem with 4 profiles. All other profiles work just fine. But on thos 4 I get always an error message:
The Girl Next Door: Unzensierte Version
Grosse Haie - Kleine Fische (A Sharks Tale)
Operation: Kingdom
Shooter

I didn't figure how to solve the problem yet.

Do you have any sort of NetNanny type program running? We ran into this in testing, that sometimes those programs would alter the files somehow and cause an error message when updating the profile.

If you're receiving an error message, that's a different issue and is likely due to a database error.  Try selecting Tools->Options->Utilities->Repair Profile Database.

FWIW:
I just updated the profiles "Operation: Kingdom" (EAN 5050582534672) and "Shooter" (EAN 4010884533798) without any problems!

If you still get an error message, posting the error message in question is always helpful in identifying the problem.

I'm having problems too - not an error but updates not happening.

In the latest db download the profile for Borat .... (5039036029827) shows a few cast and crew corrections (e.g PeeWee Piemonte  > Peewee Piemonte ). My Cast and Crew on this profile are not locked so I accepted the update (Accept All Unlocked Changes) but noticed afterwards that the profile had not changed.

I then tried the following:
Used Online>Refresh ...>Preview Changes and used the Accept Partial option and checked Cast & CrewUsed Online>Refresh ...>Refresh Profile
Removed the DVD from my collection and re-added it
(After seeing this post) Repairing the database and then refreshing the profile again.

After ALL of the above the profile remains the same and Online>Refresh ...>Preview Changes still shows that the online profile is different to mine.

Any ideas what's going on and further steps I could take.

The example you mentioned with PeeWee Piemonte has to do with the fact that the programme is unable to distinguish capitals from small print. So for the programme, Peewee and PeeWee are one and the same thing - that's why it doesn't update.

Do you encounter problems with other types of updates as well?

It's not the program is unable to distinguish between them: it certainly DOES detect a difference - for instance, when you'd try to re-upload it. It just preserves the local parsing in your database, so that the "correct" method of entry you have carefully researched for your local database isn't lost whenever you download a profile that has it another way. To illustrate this a bit better, I'll use an example of where the program DOESN'T protect you against this: studio names. So you've got a "Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment" entry in your database. Whenever you download a profile that has "Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment", your old version with the capital "S" will automatically change into the version with the lowercase "s", mostly without you even noticing it at first. Again, the problem isn't that the system doesn't distinguish - note that it will subsequently clearly note the difference once you're contributing to any of your Columbia TriStar-DVDs: it'll recognize the changed studio name, just like it recognizes a changed cast name. It's just that for studio names, the system doesn't protect you against such changes, while for cast and crew, it does. Which, judging from the number of times I've had to change "Tristar" back into "TriStar" (and similar issues), is a very good thing.

Yes - in the same profile it shows that the online profile does not have a year of birth for Pamela Anderson and one of the crew (can't remember which) changes slightly. Neither of theses changes "take" after I update the profile.

You should by able to see if it happens for your self by adding the DVD using the UPC and once added see if theres a difference to the online version.

@ T!M:
Thanks for clearing this up!

@ RAPepper:
Yes, once a birth year is in your local database, it will stay there - a profile update won't remove it. To get rid of it, you have to manually remove the birth year from your local database. To do that: find a profile in which the actor or crew member in question appears, open the Edit Profile screen, go to Crew or Cast (whichever is applicable) and select the actor/crew member in the list. Click the Find Cast/Crew member button (bottom right). Now click the Edit Cast/Crew member button and remove the birth year, and then click OK.
In the central Invelos database, birth years are only to be used if they're needed to distinguish between various cast or crew members with the same name. There's a pinned thread in the forums listing all cast/crew members for which this necessity has been established.
Of course, in your local database you can use birth years any way you choose to.

For the record: she does need one (1967). There's a different Pamela Anderson (no birth year to be found) in films like 'Some Kind of Wonderful'. Just for reference, here's her IMDb-link. This somehow hasn't been documented in the forum's pinned birth years thread yet, but it does mean that the more well-known Pamela Anderson needs a birth year.

Thanks - I'm not overly concerned about birth years and stuff, really I am concerned about why differences are detected but updating the profile does not get rid of the diferences.

Could this be happening elsewhere or is it restricted to cast/crew updates?
