Is there any way to import a database from Collectorz?  I have over 500 movies in it and I would like to switch.  I do not however, want to re-enter all of them.

There is no current way to do this... and I am not familiar with the Collectorz program... but if you can export UPC numbers only... I do know someone made a plugin to to import a list pf UPC numbers. Would have to see if I can find the post for it though... or someone else may reply that knows the plugin.

EDIT: Found It

If you can't export the UPC numbers from Collectorz, there are barcode scanners you can pick up pretty cheap.  I got a CueCat scanner from eBay for $10 plus shipping.  Last time I checked, they're going for under $10.  Makes re-entry a hell of a lot easier.

K, so I have can have a list of my 594 DVD UPCs available in several formats, txt, csv, xml, xls, and more. So how do I batch import that into DVD Profiler 3? I can't find a way to do it like you imply.

If you have a .txt file with the UPC/EAN numbers you can use the UPC Import plugin to import the titles into DVD Profiler.
Also, there is a new plugin, Bulk Edit, for users of Collectorz that will import your collection into Profiler.

However, as long as you don't have an unlimited license key (as shown on this forum by the "eye" symbol next to your user name), your program version will only handle up to 50 DVDs.

Thanks, I was going to test with 10 to start with anyways. But thanks for the details of the free limitations.

This is all because the MyMovies 2.47 windows MCE plugin also does not have a batch barcode import feature. So that forum recommends I export a DVD profiler XML and import it into MyMovies 2.47

But then I found that it takes a plugin to import barcodes into DVD Profiler, it's almost as if all these apps don't want to make it easy to migrate to them. yet they make it fairly easy to export data.

So I was going to use DVD Profiler to import my barcodes and then export to then import into MyMovies

So far, free isn't going to happen for 500+ barcodes. Still shocked this isn't handled natively without plugins for DVD Profiler. Thanks for the help.

You have to remember, these programs simply don't want you to use other programs!
That's why they don't make it easy for you to migrate data.

But then they should make export difficult to make it hard to get AWAY from the app, but they do the opposite. DVD Profiler (without plugins) makes it hard to import a huge collection from another source.

So I think apps should make it easy to migrate TO them. Which is why I was so shocked that DVD Profiler without plugins doesn't make it easy to switch to them from another source such as my custom app or Collectorz, and others...

I understand if it cost money to migrate, but then the paid for version of DVD Profiler should handle that without the use of plugins and should be officially supported.

Why? Many other programs data-mine/scrape information from other sources such as IMDb. Some are licenced to do so while others are not. Allowing DVD Profiler to freely import data from other catalog programs can open up Invelos to lawsuits from the copyright holders of said data. It's obvious to me that Invelos has opted to play it safe and I agree 100% if that is the case.

What? No... I am not asking that Invelos do anything differently on how they obtain their data. They already have a legal way to get their data when you type in or scan a barcode. I am only asking that instead of relying on a plugin to batch import barcodes which in turn are used to legal gather the data on those titles, that Invelos allow batch importing of barcodes.

I don't see how that is any less legal than one off manual entering of barcodes. I did not mean to imply importing of proprietary and legally protected data. I made no mention of data scraping. I don't know how DVD profiler gets their data when you type in a barcode, but I assume they do it legally and I am not asking for anything less. Just a little more automated without the use of plugins.

How would it be more automated by being integrated into the program as opposed to a plug-in?  Personally, I'm pretty impressed that the program allows for plug-in support.  It makes for an infinitely more upgradeable package when user contributed plug-ins are accepted.

Just one man's opinion...

Invelos's legal way of getting the date is via user's of the program who sit in front of their computer's typing the said data into the program and then submitting it. The DB is USER built. When you scan or type in your DVD barcode the information you download from the online DB has already been obtained by a user, and NOT datascrapped from some third party site.

Just wait until you come across a DVD that you own that isn't in the DB, you'll be back complaining that the info isn't in the DB.

I don't think the users are asking for a system to import data-scraped information. All the import would need to do is accept UPC codes and personal information. Everything else can come from the Invelos database as normal.

I am impressed with the plugin and the support of plugins. I have no issue with that. Just saying that for a paid program, I would like to see official tech support of importing a huge batch of barcodes. So unless you are saying that invelos tech support officially supports the barcode import plugin, that is the only reason I think it would be nice to have that feature built in versus as a plugin.

Again, the plugin works and is great. And when I made the comment about automation, I am talking about the DVD Profiler app natively without the use of plugins. Just like how I think Firefox natively should support a default home page url on new tab creation instead of relying on Tab Mix Plus (though I would also have Tab Mix Plus as it adds tons of things I like).

Just saying I would love to see someone as simple as barcode list importing as a native and officially supported function. It certainly would have saved me from having to search the forums to find out there was a plugin. Matter of fact, I almost didn't do a search to see if a plugin would solve the issue, I almost just turned around to start looking for something else since I really didn't want to manually type in 594 barcodes. (no barcode scanner).
