| | Posted: | | | | I have a feeling that this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any answer, so apologies if it has... I recently switched to a new computer with Windows Vista. My old one came with PowerDVD 4, the new one came with PowerDVD 7. The old version could differentiate between Dolby Stereo and Dolby Surround, but as far as I can tell, no version after PowerDVD 4 does that. Seems really strange unless the old version was giving incorrect results...  Anyhow - is there any software out there (preferably freeware) that can tell if an audio track is Stereo or Surround? I have tried a couple, and none seem to be able to do it. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

PowerDVD 4 can only detect the presence of the dolby surround flag on the track, which is good enough for me but is sometimes wrong. Specially since the surround flag has three states (yes, no, maybe) and is sometimes wrong. I still use PowerDVD 4 but have been told that either VobEdit or IfoEdit should also be able to read this flag. Can't remember which of the two. |

Follow up question: I understand that it doesn't have to be Surround even if it is flagged as such, but does the opposite also hold true. That is, can it be Surround even if the flag says "no"?

He is pretty much omnipotent (or omimpotent some might say given recent form  ), and could do with showing more consideration, but that's the way it is. Yeah, I was going to add " how does everyone know your name ( Yves) when it isn't in your tagline or signature?? But getting back to the question.. How tro detect surround... ?? Two ways (easy off the top). 1. Sit between all five speakers and use your ears as referance. 2. Hook up to a 5.1/dolby surround amp; and most video-audio amps will 'flag' the rear speakers as 'on' when it is set in 5.1 mode, or dolby surround. If the sound is only DD2 the amp will only flag the front two speakers, as stereo or 2 channel mono output. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. I do my Profiler work on my PC (obviously), and I don't want to run out to my living room and fire up my home theater just to find the correct audio configuration for a certain title. And unfortunately my Pioneer amp does not flag the rear speakers, so it would be ears only and that's not very reliable. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.
